Canon R6 CR3 Files are Not able to be seen in PREVIEW

Many have been bringing this up as an issue for a while now...

I was happy to see a NEW Article today that said THIS ISSUE is now RESOLVED....

It's Not.... sadly

I HAVE Big Sur 11.2 on an iMac 19,1 all updates are up to date as of this writing at 1:32pm PST.

SO THIS IS A FALSE ARTICLE

It States something was Addressed, Fixed and Released....

However this is NOT the Case.

The PROBLEM is that RAW CR3 files by Canon's latest Full Frame Digital Camera, specifically the R5 and R6 are NOT supported Natively in Big Sur v11.2 and can NOT be seen in PREVIEW.

I don't know what more I can do. I posted a screen shot showing the R6 RAW files in Preview. I have now checked three of my Macs that are running Big Sur 11.2 and they all can open the R6 files. That doesn't lead to a conclusion that there is a bug. Rather that there is an issue local to your machine.

I hope you can sort yours out.

I appreciate you being specific about your logic.

However, the RAW CR3 format was already BAKED in from Canon. It was done a few years ago as it is in other camera lines EOS M6 Mark II. EOS R. EOS RP. Powershot G5 X Mark II.

The firmware updates are for the camera only and do not change the RAW file. If your premise was correct, then Adobe would be issuing specific information with their "Camera RAW" program details to address the issue in both Lightroom and Photoshop. However this is not the case.

Additionally, the references and research presented by Canon and my background in hardware development already ruled this out.

Apple has the correct information as it has not changed since the EOS R was released in October 2018. If they included it with Big Sur, and it worked, initially, there is something else with their programming that is creating the issue.

Would love a macOS developer to weigh in on this, especially if they work on the PREVIEW app.

I wouldn't say this is local to my machine, I take care of and upgrade several iMacs for our Church Creative department. Those that are able to upgrade to Big Sur, still have this issue with CR3 files.

The problem is resolved on my MacBook Pro I just uploaded this CR3 from camera to Photo's and edited in Photoshop sorry image too big to upload but suffice it to say things are now working Thanks for all your comments and assistance.

This does not solve the problem. Also I can copy the CR3 photo from Photos to DPP, DPP Express or some other 3rd party software and edit it in there. But I can still not view or edit the CR3 photo in Photos.

I don’t fully understand what works in your configuration and what does not. However, my problem still persists: There is no way I could import CR3 photos from Canon R6 camera so that the Photos application in MacBook Air, iPad Pro or iPhone 11 Pro could view or edit them. All devices are updated to the latest OS. Of course I can import JPEG photos from R6, or use 3rd party software in Mac to edit CR3, but that is not what I want. I want the Photos app to edit CR3 photos. There is no problem for Photos app in any of my Apple devices to edit RAW photos from Canon 550D or Powershot G9X. I have tried both normal and compressed CR3, and using Canon Camera utility for transfer and card reader. Does not work, that’s it.

Just another Example of WHERE this does not work.

On one of my Church Computers that I am in charge for maintaining

21.5" 3.1Ghz Quad-Core i5 Late 2015 16GB RAM w/ macOS BigSur

Notice that the Finder Window does not process, nor does Preview, yet the OS says it supports Canon EOS R6 & R5

Dont kill it. It is useful. I let in run, and also all other Photos and iCloud processes. And obviously they fixed the problems, because now everything works in all my Apple devices, and I did nothing else but let these processes run for a couple of hours while all apps except Photos were closed.

I downloaded samples from this link. The preview works but the thumbnail not, which is really inconvenient. Also I checked the raw samples of EOS R, showing that it works on both previews and thumbnails.

Except for dialabrain and myself, where we can see multiple R6 RAW images in Quick Look, Preview, add to and view these images in Photos on both Intel and M1 Macs running Big Sur 11.2.

Have now experimented have to import photos using MacBook or they don't display on iOS so can only assume photos on MacBook is generating a preview that iOS can read not ideal!!

What would be your BEST Guess as to why mine does not work? I just got this iMac 4 days ago and have only loaded My Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop on it AFTER I did all the Mac OS updates from Catalina to Big Sur.
