Canon R6 CR3 Files are Not able to be seen in PREVIEW

Many have been bringing this up as an issue for a while now...

I was happy to see a NEW Article today that said THIS ISSUE is now RESOLVED....

It's Not.... sadly

I HAVE Big Sur 11.2 on an iMac 19,1 all updates are up to date as of this writing at 1:32pm PST.

ARTICLE CONTENT

Digital camera RAW formats supported by iOS 14, iPadOS 14, and macOS Big Sur

These operating systems include system-level support for RAW images taken by many third-party cameras.

iOS 14, iPadOS 14, and macOS Big Sur include enhanced support for processing digital camera RAW formats, providing better detail and improved noise reduction. These RAW formats offer greater image-editing flexibility on iOS and iPadOS using third-party apps that support RAW.1

Support for additional RAW formats is added over time. This list is current as of 2 February 2021 and reflects compatibility for the latest versions of iOS 14, iPadOS 14, and macOS Big Sur.

LISTED CAMERAs in article stating they are fixed

  • Canon EOS R5
  • Canon EOS R6

SO THIS IS A FALSE ARTICLE

It States something was Addressed, Fixed and Released....

However this is NOT the Case.

The PROBLEM is that RAW CR3 files by Canon's latest Full Frame Digital Camera, specifically the R5 and R6 are NOT supported Natively in Big Sur v11.2 and can NOT be seen in PREVIEW.

I did nothing but the let the Photos app open running idle in the MacBook Air, iPad Pro and iPhone 11 Pro with all other apps closed, connected to wifi and with full battery. That fixed the problem in all three devices in a couple of hours. I spyed with activity monitor what was happening in the MacBook Air while it was ”idle”. There were 6 to 8 Photos related or iCloud related processes actively running, and they fixed the problem.

I will test this... however this should not have to be the case as, no professional photographer, with a professional grade camera would attached their camera to a computer and transfer their images in this manor as a normal procedure. Memory cards are utilized for this purpose as they are much faster and the preferred method of image viewing and transfer from a memory card reader.

I doubt that the transfer method of photos from camera to Mac, ie. wireless, cable or via momory card readed would make any difference to the CR3 photos’ compatibility with Photos app in the Mac. Canon’s Camera Connect app in the Mac, for wireless, is a poor and unreliable app. Transfer via cable is robust, reliable and faster than wireless. Memory card reader is the best method, at least with big amounts of photos.

Prayermedic, I am simply soliciting new methods of working through a problem with documentation. As well as confirming whether a solution works or does not work. Thank for your suggestion from Canon, however it is not a solution with positive results on 3 very Different Hardware based Macs running Big Sur 11.2 that I have tested this upon.

I have no idea how you interpreted what I stated as "nasty" or not nice. I don't appreciate the personal attack in a help forum.

Please take your personal offense to someone who can help you with them instead of attacking others based on your personal biases. It is your right to remove yourself from the conversation if you feel 'offended' instead of attacking.

Ybbe, I agree, with your statement, card readers are best. I have tested the cable method, and as I stated in a previous response a moment ago, it went without success on 3 different hardware based Macs running Big Sur 11.2. Wireless is a battery suck with the new R5 & R6 and only works with Canon's software, which is not what I was attempting to solve, however it is a good point of reference for conversation on connectivity methods. That's another topic for a Canon forum, however ;)

I have to say this is a point of frustration that Apple has yet to resolve. I did submit another request to them with this thread for documentation.

OK now I got you. I cannot verify because I don’t see photos in Finder, because they are in Photos album in iCloud. ICloud is very inexpensive, only 9,99 € per month for 2 TB of storage. I have in iCloud 63000 photos and 848 videos, and yet only 0,6 TB used so far. Unless you have hundreds of thousends photos or hundreds of hours of video, iCloud is cheap and reliable solution.
