Why won't my macbook pro use 144hz on macos, but will in bootcamp?

I got a 144 Hz monitor which works fine on my windows pc and when I use bootcamp on my macbook,

but when I try and change the refresh rate in system preferences, it maxes out at 120 Hz. I've read that 144 Hz is possible on mac os and it cant be the hdmi adapter as bootcamp allows it to work perfectly...

Anyone know a solution?

After I setup the Mac with the monitor I realized that the display runs at 100hz max. I thought all right maybe I need another HDMI cable. I bought one, there's no improvement. I have an USB-C to DisplayPort cable as well, it can deliver 144hz. According to the specs I don't know why the HDMI can't work at 144hz. Can anyone please help me with this? Thank you for advance!

4k 60hz on external monitor from MacBook Pro 2013 (Intel) Hi I bought an external monitor, it should run 4k 60hz, however I only get 30hz. I tried buying the right cables and it still didn't work. An IT guy from the store told me that I will never be able to get it to run in 60hz, because my monitor only supports DisplayPort 1.1, and 1.2. How does the displayport version affect my connection through HDMI? Do I really have to buy an entirely new monitor? I doubt it, so maybe someone can explain :)
