Emails being marked as read across multiple accounts

I have 2 imap based email accounts. They are hosted independently of each other by 2 different providers.

Server side, when email is sent to account 1, a copy of that email is bcc’d to account 2.

I look at the email on account 2 and it is marked as read by the iPad as it should.

I then note my read count on account 1 reduces. The same email I read on account 2 is now marked as read in account 1 even though I hadn’t read it through account 1.

I have replicated this issue on an iPad Pro running version 14.4 and an iPad Air 2 running 14.2

Hi there evil_hitman,

We understand you're seeing an email being read on both accounts when forwarded from one to the other, and we'd like to see if we can assist.

Do the emails show in a single thread in the Mail app? If so, it may be expected for both accounts to read the email when viewing the thread.

If you head to Settings > Mail and toggle "Organize by Thread," do you experience the same issue?

Thanks!

evil_hitman,

Thanks for giving that a try, and keeping us posted on the results.

It sounds like this could be more related to how things are set up in the settings of the email accounts themselves. If you were to log into the email account via the web browser (not your device), and perform the same action (read the email from account 2) does it show read in account 1? This can be expected since IMAP accounts sync changes across all devices, and depending on how you have things set up, that might be the case here. We would recommend reaching out to your Email Service Provider first (for both or either account), to confirm whether the accounts are working as expected based on your current setup.

If your Email Service Provider confirms this is not the expected behavior, feel free to reach out to Apple Support as the next step, for more investigation: Get Support
