Lose connection overtime try to load macOS Big Sur?
Currently running Mojave and trying to load Big Sur. Do I have to load High Sierra first? Every time I try to load Big Sur it comes back as 'Lost connection'
iMac 27″, macOS 10.14

First off Mojave is newer that High Sierra. So, one does not need to downgrade from Mojave to High Sierra.
Lost Connection I am guessing is that one is connected via Wifi. If this is the Only option for Internet Connection - restart the Router and then do same to computer with all external drives disconnected. Disconnect ALL Other devices using the Wifi - want to Maximum bandwidth available for only this computer. Open the Apple Apps Store and find Big Sur and start the download. Try not to use the computer for anything else but for the download. It will be the Full Installer 12.18 GB in size and take much time. Do not be fooled by long pauses - the time clock may say 15 minutes remain but in Real Time to could be 30 - 45 minutes. Each apparent pause can be painful to watch but just do not let the Screen Saver to activate for go to Sleepmode - wiggle the mouse from time to time.
If all goes well and it finishes the download, suggest do not allow it to launch - if it does just Quit it. Make a copy of the new Application in Applications folder - Install Big Sur - to an external drive for future usage.
Now restart computer in Safe Mode - Shift - key immediately at startup. It will load slowly - Normal. Once logged into computer - it look different and acts different - also normal. Launch the Install Big Sur and follow prompts.
