AOL mail error

My aol email account will not retrieve new emails. It’s says “Cannot get mail. No password provided for emailaddress@aol.com” please go to mail account settings and enter a password. I’ve done that several times on my iPhone and iPad. Also reset network settings. Both are updated to new iOS. Deleted aol mail from accounts on iPad first and now I cannot add it back in mail accounts. Still not working on iPhone. See attached photo for the pop up I keep getting.

I have this issue also. However, I do not have the aol app for my main aol email; it is my email set up to show on home screen mail folder. I do not want to use the aol app, and I don't have 2-factor authorization so the above instructions won't work for me. There doesn't seem to be a particular reason this happened. I did check into deleting the account but a message said items hadn't been updated so I'd lose them (mail and notes?) Any clues?

Good Morning,

Wanted to advise that I FINALLY was able to add my AOL email to the mail app on my iPhone. What I ended up having to do was to backup my iPhone, without the mail app, then I reset it to the factory settings. Before I restored the phone from the backup, just as a test, I tried to add the AOL email info to the mail app on the freshly restored factory settings and it worked. I then restored the phone from the backup, downloaded the mail app that I had deleted before the backup, entered the info and FINALLY it works. Thanks for the guidance, I was at my wits end.

Best,

Sarah

I have this issue as well, but only on my iPhone. I usually don’t use the aol app. I have this account added to the mail app on my iPhone.

‘’if I delete aol from that and try to re-add it, I get a “rate limited” message. If I try to go to my aol page on my safari browser on my iPhone, I get a “rate limited” error. Then, a few days later, I can add back the aol to my mail app and it works fine. For about 24 hours. The. The aol app and the aol on the mail app either never load, or it asks for my password to be put into settings. I then go to settings, click to add the password and I get “rate limited”.

All of my updates are up to date. This is not happening on my iMac or my iPad.

What is happening, and how can I fix it?

Glad it worked out for now. I will stay tuned. I have a feeling that the issue may not be AOL. Just need to find out and know what this "Rate Limit" is. It may be that the "Rate Limit" was lifted when you tried again. Somehow, I feel that this is related to the amount/rate of data being moved between your devices and your cellular/Wi-Fi service provider. I am, however, absolutely not sure about this until we see the exact error message.

Interesting regarding the VPN comment. I turned my VPN off and it let me add the account back in and also get mail. Just one data point but it will be interesting to see if the problem recurs. I had never gotten the rate limited message before but yesterday I switched to a different VPN than the one I had been using.

Ugh it’s so weird

Only on my MacBook Pro am I having this problem. My iMac and my phone will except my normal AOL password. My MacBook Pro will not so I have to generate an app specific password. It excepts it, and then every day kicks it off and asks me to put in a password and I have to follow the steps every day. I don’t understand why only one computer of mine will not except an AOL password all of a sudden. Even the app specific one gets kicked off after about seven hours

If I try to delete AOL from the MacBook Pro it sends me a warning that by doing so I will delete my AOL account from my other devices because I’m using keychain so I’m afraid to do it. I guess I could just reinstall it on all devices but I’m hesitant

Hey I want to thank you for your help. So I did as you said but it happened again only I may have found the issue. It happened again on the laptop as soon as I enabled my keychain. Imagine the passwords on both computers need to match if keychain is checked / enabled? So can I repeat the process in AOL by disabling the previous devise passwords … recreating a new one and use the same generated device password for both devices?

Help! I am trying to access my AOL email on my iPhone and I cannot log on. It shows “rate limited” message on the password page. This is only on my iPhone. I can access my AOL email on my laptop thru Chrome. I deleted my AOL email account from my iPhone and now I can’t access it at all thru the AOL app or thru the internet. What can I do?
