My aol email account will not retrieve new emails. It’s says “Cannot get mail. No password provided for emailaddress@aol.com” please go to mail account settings and enter a password. I’ve done that several times on my iPhone and iPad. Also reset network settings. Both are updated to new iOS. Deleted aol mail from accounts on iPad first and now I cannot add it back in mail accounts. Still not working on iPhone. See attached photo for the pop up I keep getting.

I did some research for you. AOL is now requiring App-Specific passwords to be entered instead of your normal password. This is part of their security measure. So, How does one create an App Specific password to enter for AOL email account(s)? See below:
If you've activated 2-step verification for your AOL account, you'll need to generate and use an "app password" to access AOL Mail from these apps.
1. Sign in and go to the AOL Account security page. You can do this by signing on to AOL from a computer.
2. Click Generate app password or Manage app passwords.
3. Select your app from the drop down menu and click Generate.
4. Follow the instructions below the password.
- Be sure to enter the password into your app without any spaces.
5. Click Done.
6. Use this app password and your email address to sign in to your email app.

I actually have 2 aol accounts in the mail icon. One works. I do not have 2-factor setup and still not getting on the one that has the error. And I changed passwords on all the locations. Any other suggestions?
I have this issue as well, and just verified the two step process by phone (not the security key) and it still won’t pull my email. I am not using the aol app, but have set up my email in the accounts section of the iPad itself. Does this mean I will not be able to use my iPad account to pull my aol email any longer?

I wasn’t using the “aol app” either. However I were using the mail icon on my iPhone to check email etc. and all of sudden... “error...invalid password”.
Changed password numerous times. Carefully entering them to no avail. However just tinkering around one day I stumbled upon my aol security page. I’d attempted to access it previously after reading Axel’s post but since it had been years since I had to access it, it was unfamiliar and frustrating. However if you can have little patience and follow instructions you can fix yours too! It does work!!!

This worked for me too. Deleted aol account from settings and then added immediately after. It took under a minute for the entire fix. Thanks for posting your reply as to your solution. Took the fear out of doing that for me.
Have the same issue ....I can get mail on my laptop and watch....but it all of a sudden I stopped getting new mail on my iPhone.
I reset my phone....tried changing password...and STILL no mail.
Any ideas ?
I use ail as my email (not the app) and do not have 2 factor identification. I followed your message instructions and am now getting a message saying this not a valid email address. Now what Do I do? Help.

One more thing—I can login on the app easily., just not on the regular email program. I hate using the app. Is there a way I can login on the regular aol mail program on my iPhone. I tried the “generate a password” solution but now I I’m getting an invalid email address error message. Any help would be much appreciated.
I have 2-Factor verification; another email; have changed my password 3 times and I’m still getting the same message saying that I don’t have a password, go to Settings and on and on. I haven’t had any email for two whole days. Please help.
Not sure if you are asking me but when I follow your directions and enter the password generated on my computer, I get a message saying please enter a valid email. When I re-enter my email, (still with the computer generated password) I still get the invalid email message. Any suggestions? I have many many saved emails and do not want to anything to lose them. It’s crazy how one day you are looking at your email on your phone and the next day it just won’t work. I don’t think I missed a notice about it. How would the average user know that AOL’s app suddenly had a new requirement? Did I miss something? So, again, I say thank you for doing the research. 😊
I am getting the same message that I can't send an email because my email or password is incorrect.
I am a literal direction follower and am having a bit of trouble with these directions.
I can definitely get into the security page from my computer.
My problem is that since I have had this situation before it looks like I have 3 different aol accounts. It says accounts(3).
That is where I am now stuck. I'm not sure which to click on to generate the app password.
One is the iCloud account and the other has my actual aol email. The other is AOL (says Mail, Notes).
I don't want to mess anything up.
I feel like I need the version of this for "Dummies" and I am stuck.
What do I do?????
After fixing AOL mail on three devices I'm having an issue receiving mail on my husband's AOL account that's tied to my mail app. I used to be able to get his emails on my mail app but it suddenly stopped working. Is there a way to fix that
I have tried this numerous times. After I copy the generated password and press done, I get a message saying invalid email address. Please enter valid email address. I have put my email address in again where it says add another email and that does not help. Any suggestions as to what I should do next? Please help.
