AOL mail error

My aol email account will not retrieve new emails. It’s says “Cannot get mail. No password provided for emailaddress@aol.com” please go to mail account settings and enter a password. I’ve done that several times on my iPhone and iPad. Also reset network settings. Both are updated to new iOS. Deleted aol mail from accounts on iPad first and now I cannot add it back in mail accounts. Still not working on iPhone. See attached photo for the pop up I keep getting.

I did some research for you. AOL is now requiring App-Specific passwords to be entered instead of your normal password. This is part of their security measure. So, How does one create an App Specific password to enter for AOL email account(s)? See below:

If you've activated 2-step verification for your AOL account, you'll need to generate and use an "app password" to access AOL Mail from these apps.

1. Sign in and go to the AOL Account security page. You can do this by signing on to AOL from a computer.

2. Click Generate app password or Manage app passwords.

3. Select your app from the drop down menu and click Generate.

4. Follow the instructions below the password.

- Be sure to enter the password into your app without any spaces.

5. Click Done.

6. Use this app password and your email address to sign in to your email app.

I've had the same issue since late May, both my iPad and an iPhone won't load new AOL e mail regardless of the number of times I enter the correct password, this is not an issue on my iMac or another iPhone, so I don't know what the problem is. I don't have 2 stage authentication set up and my account has not been hacked. My iPad is 2nd genation (7yrs old) and the iPhone is probably similar age incase this is a reason.

I generated the app password but in settings,mail,account,aol.. there is only my emai listed. I am receiving

emails. But when I send an email to myself from ios mail app it goes to outbox and says

canniot send mail ther server rejected one the recipients 's addresses. the message has been placed in your outbox.

I can receive mails from other sources ion my iphone.

When I got to the mail app or settings and I click on AOL and try to enter my full email and the app-specific password it says my password is invalid. If I select "Other" at the bottom of the email list providers and try to enter the app specific password there is where I get the SSL error. If I delete the app specific password from my desktop and try to enter my normal login credentials when it goes to verify it just takes me right back to the page with the list of all the major mail providers. I have reset my network settings and that has not done anything. It is doing the exact same thing on my iPad. I do have LastPass and am not curious if that is causing an issue. This is incredibly frustrating.

I have this issue as well, but only on my iPhone. I usually don’t use the aol app. I have this account added to the mail app on my iPhone.

‘’if I delete aol from that and try to re-add it, I get a “rate limited” message. If I try to go to my aol page on my safari browser on my iPhone, I get a “rate limited” error. Then, a few days later, I can add back the aol to my mail app and it works fine. For about 24 hours. The. The aol app and the aol on the mail app either never load, or it asks for my password to be put into settings. I then go to settings, click to add the password and I get “rate limited”.

All of my updates are up to date. This is not happening on my iMac or my iPad.

What is happening, and how can I fix it?

Very interesting. At first, I was baffled by what exactly “Rate Limited” meant in AOL terms. I performed a Google search with, “AOL Rate Limited” and it yielded some interesting results. Below is one example for you:

AOL Email Send (Rate) Limits

AOL imposes a rate limit on an AOL member when a member exceeds the acceptable number of email messages sent in a given time period. The following restrictions apply when sending emails from an AOL connection:

  • AOL email send limit - no more than 100 recipients per message or 500 recipients per connection
  • AOL other SMTP limits - max 16mb per message
  • AOL email-outbound policy - http://postmaster-us.info.aol.com/ipt/
  • AOL SMTP restriction expiry method - N/A

This appears to be the case with the emails sent or attachment size. I am not sure. I recommend that you contact AOL for further clarification.
