My Mac mini won't completely sleep on it's own

macOS Big Sur

V 11.2

Mac mini 2018

3GHz 6-core intel core i5

8GB 2667 MHz DDR4

Ever since I update my OS to the above my mac mini will not go completely to sleep on it's own. The monitor sleeps but the computer itself does not and gets really hot. If I sleep it manually there isn't a problem. In system preferences here are my settings under energy saver:

I do have an external HD that is always connected to my mini. I use it for my Apple TV computer movies etc.

I have done multiple shut downs and restarts and nothing seems to help. Some mornings when I get up it is really hot to the touch and I'm worried something is going to burn out. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
