SOCD report detected: (AP watchdog expired)

Mac Mini M1 16GB keeps crashing and then restarting randomly on all applications with following error message:

I was asked by Apple second level support to provide details of the crash reports logged when it happens.

It is [SOCD report detected: (AP watchdog expired)

SOCD report detected: (AP watchdog expired)

Even when idle.

Steps taken with 2nd level support:

  1. MAC OS REINSTALL.
  2. MAC DISK ERASE AND REINSTALL FROM ICLOUD.
  3. ISSUE ALSO HAPPENS IN GUEST MODE LOG IN.

Apple 2nd level support seemed to think it was due to external hard drive issues. They asked me to test without drive connected.

can confirm now that the SOCD crash would only occur with My external USB A Western Digital Hard drive physically connected. After disconnecting it has not happened again, so far. After 5 days.

do you all have external drives connected?

I have the exact same problem. Support suggested I take out everything connected to the M1 and any hubs, then restart at each phase and see what happened. (I did and all restarts worked properly)

This of course, was after doing an OS reinstall as well

They say if I can't replicate the error (get the M1 to crash), then they can't help me lol

Same log: SOCD report detected: (AP watchdog expired)

Would love to know a solution

Connected through a non-powered hub is a WD MY Book (I use this to back up certain files, once a month) and a Focusrite audio signal box.

Hub is connected directly to the M1, as is OWC for Time Machine, monitor, and dongle for wireless logitech keyboard

Also have speakers and an OWC for Time Machine connected to the M1

And like most of you all, support has unfortunately not been very helpful

Love to hear any fixes on this. Good luck to all!

M1 Mac mini - Just got: SOCD report detected: (AP watchdog expired). My screen was a sort of checkerboard pattern then system restarted. I have a WD My Book Studio connected via firewire 800 --> 2 Apple branded devices that convert it to USB-C. It's my Time machine backup.

I also get kernel panics on an almost daily basis which seem to be related to sleep/wakeup.

This is my second M1 mini, the first had to be returned because of login password bugs in Big Sur. Wouldn't accept the correct password.

Overall a nice machine, but I am getting frustrated with regular crashes. Makes me think I am running windows 10.

Eh, again, I am not so sure it is USB of any kind causing this out of blue crash. I have an ancient WD USB 2.0 Journaled HFS+ HD hooked up. A less ancient (still sold) Seagate APFS HD, I think USB 3. Both powered.

Both are also direct into the Mini USB. Not the C port.

Over a few months now, I have only had the crash one time!

My money is 100% on something else. Probably system related and, maybe Apple fixed it with the 11.3 update. No crash since then.

Moi aussi. Just happened to me for the first time, and I've had this Mac Mini M1 for 4 or 5 months now. I had running:

  • Youtube
  • Chrome
  • Safari
  • Outlook
  • Finder

I have a Seagate USB drive connected, and a powered USB hub with a Logitech webcam and a PreSonus Studio24C audio interface.

It went full green screen when I clicked within Finder to navigate to a different folder. Not coincidentally, I'm sure, Big Sur pushed an update this morning. I am now on 11.4. Before this update, it had never happened.

So I had the same issue just a few minutes ago. I have a Mac mini M1 with 16 GB of RAM. Had no problems for the last month. All the time I had the following devices connected:

  • USB Microphone (Samson Meteor mic)
  • unpowered USB-A-Hub
    • USB Mouse and Keyboard
    • Logitech USB Webcam
  • USB-C Hub
    • Philips Full-HD Monitor via HDMI Port of the Hub
    • Creative Pebble V3 Speakers
  • USB-C Sandisk Extreme external SSD 1 TB
  • second Philips Full-HD Monitor via the HDMI Port of the Mac mini

The restart happend when watching a YouTube video in Firefox. Other apps running where Slack, Whatsapp Desktop and Zoom (no active video call, just idle).

Hopefully this is not a hardware error with the new chips...

my theory: ...there's some sort of leak or overflow that builds up over time, and eventually the system has to restart.

This would imply that relatively frequent manual shutdown/restarts would avoid the problem. I wonder if that's the case for people here. I tend to leave my computer running all the time, just shutting off the monitor to save power. I have this crash maybe once every two or three months.

I shall correct myself, then. This is probably a timeout of the SoC management processor, whatever that may be. Something in the firmware locked up doing something, or perhaps there's a firmware bug. I'm hoping it isn't a hardware bug that can't be corrected with a newer firmware image.

As I said above, I did submit a feedback with the .panic report the last time I encountered the bug, and maybe that does something helpful that wasn't previously logged by paid testers working directly for Apple, or by other volunteer testers in the community.

Just to add another datapoint, here is my system setup:

  • Mac Mini (M1 2020)
  • 16 GB memory
  • 256 GB storage
  • Big Sur 11.4
  • Received just 6 days ago and used Migration Assistant to migrate from an iMac 2020 (Intel) running Mojave.
  • So far, the computer has only crashed overnight while asleep, not while I was using it; it's now happened two nights in a row.
  • Peripherals:
    • HDMI: Main monitor
    • USB-C (1): Second monitor via HDMI plugged into USB-C hub (not powered)
    • USB-C (2): Elgato Cam Link 4K via USB 3 -> USB-C adapter
    • USB 3.0 (1): Powered USB 3.0 hub
    • USB 3.0 (2): [Nothing]
    • Ethernet cable (because in addition to crashing for no reason, this computer also has unforgivably bad wifi)

I just removed the unpowered USB-C hub that I was using to connect my second monitor via HDMI and instead plugged that monitor into its own USB-C adapter. Let's see if that works. I'm not exactly hopeful...
