Washed out external monitor on M1 Mac mini on usb c

Just got a new M1 Mac mini that I want to connect 2 monitors to. Both LG 4K 27UK850. The one hooked up via hdmi looks great. The one hooked up via usb c looks terrible. Washed out colors, low contrast. I see other people complaining about this in various forums, Reddit, Macrumors. All settings on the monitor and system are proper. Used the same set up for years on my Intel MacBook Pro With no issues. Just fishing for an official response and hopefully a fix soon? Otherwise it has to go back. Not really usable for me in its current state.

Found some solutions. I've had the exact same problem. I have a M1 Mac Mini using 35-inch LG monitor via USB-C to Display Port. Prior to 11.3, turning off the monitor then back on again used to fix it and the colors would no longer be washed out. After upgrading to 11.3 I initially had no problems with the color, but I started fiddling around with the HDR settings (in System Preferences -> Display) - big mistake - _don't_ check the HDR tick box. I ended up checking the HDR tick box and the colors became washed out again, even after unchecking the box. I tried turning off/on the monitor, unplugging the monitor, rebooting, changing out to a USB-C to HDMI cable then back to USB-C to Display Port - but none of these worked - still washed out colors. The solution I found was to mirror my display via AirPlay Display (in System Preferences -> Display) to my Samsung TV, then turn off the AirPlay Display, and my monitor reset back to the nice dark/vivid colors and no longer washed out. That worked for me, hope that helps :)

I have no issues with my intel macbook pro from 2020.

But others with more M1 washed out issues here:

Just sticking with the usb c to hdmi cable for now. It's the only one that works.

Hmm.. Maybe I should be more descriptive.

  1. Macbook Pro M1 with LG 4K as external display on Display Port. Extended display mode.
  2. Went to Display setting and changed Airplay Display setting from "Off" to go to My Apple TV. and used Mirrored mode.
  3. THe display went to 1080p scaled mode. Colors stayed washed out
  4. Disconnected from Airplay. Color stayed washed out mode. changed back to extended mode. COlor stayed washed out
  5. closed the lid and opened back again.
  6. Color stayed washed out.

Looks like I am missing something...

Same issue here. Brand new M1 Mac mini. Two brand new LG32QK500 QHD Monitors straight out of the box. HDMI connection bright and sharp. USB-c (Via HDMI adaptor) muted, slightly blurrier, different screen temp.

Swap cables - the one connected to usb c is always poorer looking. Tried every solution suggested, same result. Settings on each monitor are identical.

Shocked that this is still an issue this many months on. Come on Apple. I know you aren't the same as you used to be, but this is pretty weak.

Thanks to all of you out there who have contributed to possible solutions!

This is not an ideal soution. Most USB-C monitors carry data (for a bulit in USB hub) as well as video. You'll loose that functionality. In case of a Macbook you'll also loose the charging capabilities of your USB-C display as well. So no more single cable docking for you. Thanks Apple!

Giving up on Apple regarding this issue is understandable but it's till a shame that a tech company cannot make something as fundamental as this to work properly.

I too have had this issue since I bought my M1 Mac Mini 10 months ago - I've put up with the issue because it tends to be quite intermittent. I have two 4k displays hooked up (BENQ EL2870U's), one via DisplayPort and the other HDMI. My main display hooked up via DP 'shimmers' and I get very fine vertical bars down the screen. I've replaced the DP cable and swapped back to HDMI with no effect. If I move windows around, it causes the shimmer to fade or get worse. It does tend to stop on its own and everything is fine. I've also tried adjusting resolution, change the refresh rate etc etc but it doesnt appear to make a difference.

Whilst i've put up with it on an 'almost' daily basis, i'd love to know what the fix will be - Can anyone else advise?

Thanks, but useless without a link or description of "HDR". Is it a system setting or ??? Actually, this page is a good example. On my Mbook Pro running 12.0.1 the field borders and text are in such a faint gray as to be nearly invisible without expanding the text to 18 or 24 point. It's not the size, it's the low contrast ratio.,

Dear Cupertino, aging and loss of visual acuity comes to all of us eventually. Your light gray text may be pretty and pleasing to your jr. college design instructor, but...
