This item is temporarily unavailable - OS X Network Install

So, a couple of weeks back I bought an Apple Mac 2009, bought Microsoft office 2008 for Apple Mac 2009 and found that the Max said there is no software to be found on the disc.

Mrs who is a Apple Mac 2018 user tried in vain to load updates for Windows 2008.

Anyway, today I decided to sell this Mac on and put it on Ebay. Went to do a system restore and did that.

When it came to installing OS X on the Mac HDD, my user ID and password entry result in 'Ths item is temporarily unavailable. Tried this several times. Did a search and found an old post on communities here that I need the original owners ID and user password. NOT SO GREAT.

Mrs tried her user name and password as she did a windows office 2008 update, as well as having done previous updates on her 'own' account as the old post said, Apple needed other users with update history.

DIDN'T WORK EITHER.

So, at present I am hoping that the seller who sold me the Mac is kind enough for me to pop round (socially distancing in COVID times) and enter their old user name and password JUST to reload El Capitan.

IF, they are not willing to do that, AM I SCREWED?

MacBook Pro 15″, OS X 10.11

You should never use your username/AppleID and password to install macOS when selling a Mac.

If the Mac boots normally, then create a bootable macOS USB installer using the instructions in this Apple article:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201372

Try booting into Internet Recovery Mode using Command + Option + R to see if you can boot to the online macOS installer (Apple's information on this is very confusing). It is best if you connect the Mac directly to the router with an Ethernet cable for a faster more reliable network connection and to avoid any WiFi issues. If it boots to the online macOS installer, then launch Disk Utility to erase the whole physical drive before selecting the "Install macOS" option. How you partition & erase the whole physical drive depends on the version of the macOS installer used:

macOS 10.6 to 10.10 installer:

macOS 10.11+ installer:

https://support.apple.com/guide/disk-utility/erase-and-reformat-a-storage-device-dskutl14079/mac

Otherwise if this Mac can run OSX 10.6, then you can purchase a used OSX 10.6 DVD installer, however, which one you need will depend on the exact model of the Mac. If the Mac shipped from the factory with OSX 10.6, then you need the gray system specific OSX 10.6 DVD, otherwise if the Mac shipped with OSX 10.5 or earlier, then you need the retail version of the OSX 10.6 DVD.
