Group Text On iPhone11, Phone Keeps Muting Alerts on a Thread

I have a group text thread with three others. I muted alerts on the thread while I was busy on Wednesday. I went in to the info on the thread and unmuted the alerts Wednesday evening. But the mute/dnd on that thread seems to keep turning itself back on. Every time I return to the iPhone Messages app, the mute on that thread is turned back on. I have reset it dozens of times. I have closed the app and restarted it. I have rebooted the phone. I have checked on my laptop, and tried turning off the mute there instead. But it keeps re-muting that threat. Help!

Hello JWey2021,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand that group text is muted by itself on your iPhone, and we'd be happy to look into this with you.

Just to confirm, are you following these steps to unmute yourself?

  1. Go to the group text message.
  2. Tap the top of the conversation, then tap the Info button .
  3. Turn off Hide Alerts.

If the group text isn't pinned. When Hide Alerts is off, you'll not find a crescent moon icon next to the conversation.

Also, let's try to leave the group text, and rejoin again by following the steps in this link:

Leave a group text on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

We hope this information is useful. Kind regards.

Thanks for responding. I had followed those instructions multiple times to unmute, but the mute continued to turn back on. I was able to solve the issue, however. Though I am uncertain of what exactly it was, the cause seems to have been an odd interaction with my Apple Watch. Turning off the watch, then unmuting the conversation, then rebooting the watch seems to have corrected the problem. The alerts on that group text thread are behaving normally again.

I suggest we all shift our conversation to my recently created thread about this issue: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252606994

Apple isn't gonna pay attention to this current thread because it's irreversibly marked as "solved." I'm hoping y'all might post on the other thread instead. I won't mark it as "solved" until there's a clear, provable, ongoing solution.

Thanks!

FWIW ... happened to me again an hour or so ago on my iPad in a 3-person conversation. In screenshot #1 notice the appearance of the small icon that the red arrow is pointing at. This appeared just as I started typing my reply. Then it changed to a normal looking half moon after I'd sent the reply. I then manually "unmuted" it. Then about 15 minutes later a new reply comes in from one of the other two participants, along with chime notification. I go to iMessage to read the reply, and it's muted again (ref. screenshot #2), even though I'd heard the chime. Unmuted again manually, rinse repeat ... So aggravating.

this was happening to me also. I looked at the group message on my watch after I unmuted the group text on my phone. It was still muted. On the list of messages on my watch I swiped left and unmuted. I think it worked.

it’s three days later than the comment I made above, and this method does work. Apparently the group chat can be muted on the watch, and doesn’t synchronize with the group chat mute/unmute on the iPhone.

so just make sure the chat is not mited on your watch.

So I have tried everything as well, and some of my group chats are still muting automatically. According to someone above this has been "Solved". No it hasn't been solved for everyone. I have a critically important group thread from work, and i CANNOT miss a text in the middle of the night. I have left and rejoined the thread, deleted the thread and had someone add me back in, rebooted my watch and phone as mentioned above. Nothing has worked! Is someone still working on this? Is there something else to try, do I need to restore from an old backup, or should I just go buy an Android device?

This problem should absolutely NOT be marked as “solved.” Short of resetting my entire phone, I’ve tried every proposed solution and the iMessage conversation in question just keeps re-muting itself.

This is SUPER annoying, Apple, so please re-mark the problem as unsolved until a solid solution is found.

The only other thing I can think to try is to open every single device that uses iMessage simultaneously—that is, make sure they’re all on, and synced so the conversation looks unmuted on every device—then turn them off and on again. I’m thinking maybe one device is “remembering” the conversation as muted, and it’s spreading that status to the others? Frankly I’m not hopeful, since I’ve already made sure every device has the conversation unmuted. But I haven’t tried to do that on every device at the exact same time. So I’ll try it. If it works, I’ll post again.

Greeting all:

I'm the OP on this thread. A suggestion. I am the one who marked this "solved" with the specialist back when I resolved the issue myself, and that was before almost anyone else (only one other at the time who also fixed it themselves I think) jumped on the thread as sharing this problem.

If you are continuing to have this issue, you/the thread might get a response from Apple if you reply directly to the post from the Apple Community Specialist on this thread, not to my original post. Their original reply post to me is the one marked as coming from "karina184."

You can also open a new, unsolved thread for this, as I do not seem to be able to change the status of this thread back to unsolved. I would if it would let me, sorry.

It probably won't get more attention from Apple unless someone still having difficulty either: 1) directly responds/flags "Karina184" to gain their attention; or 2) unless somebody creates a new "unsolved" thread (and maybe links to this one as reference).

I hope you all can get this solve for yourselves too. Good luck!
