Group Text On iPhone11, Phone Keeps Muting Alerts on a Thread

This started happening to me a few weeks ago, soon after the newest iOS update. I do have an iPad; however, I’ve never muted the conversation on that device. Only on the iPhone. Not sure if it’s a sync issue or what, but rebooting and unmuting the conversation doesn’t seem to fix anything.

I am not sure if it was a hard reset or just a reset-I am NOT tech savvy which is why I gave up early and called Apple Support- but they screen shared and walked me through the whole process and I did not lose anything. Had to re-do my password and face ID but everything else was fine.

I have this issue as well, but I don’t own an Apple Watch. It seems that every time I unmute my conversation and completely close the tab it mutes itself again.

It stays unmuted until someone sends a message and then it immediately flips back.

This hasnt been solved at all. Its an obvious bug. No real workaround until Apple fixes it, as far as I can tell.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand that group text is muted by itself on your iPhone, and we'd be happy to look into this with you.

Just to confirm, are you following these steps to unmute yourself?

1. Go to the group text message.
2. Tap the top of the conversation, then tap the Info button .
3. Turn off Hide Alerts.

If the group text isn't pinned. When Hide Alerts is off, you'll not find a crescent moon icon next to the conversation.

Also, let's try to leave the group text, and rejoin again by following the steps in this link:

I’m having the same problem. I’ve done everything I’ve known to do and followed theses suggestions and it still does it. Very aggravating!! The group text in question is with my family and I keep missing messages from them because of it.

This started happening to me I believe after one of the iPhone updates. I believe I had this group chat muted during the update and now it won’t unmute. I was hoping it cleared up yesterday with the new update but nope!

I’ve tried EVERY FIX posted and my group messages keep muting!! I’ve had to unmute it several times today and it just goes back to muted. Apple needs to figure this out and fix it! I have the new iPhone 12 Pro. My older iPad doesn’t do this, so it’s a problem with the iPhone IMO.

I am having this same issue and am not getting an option to reply to Karina184’s response. Any other thoughts on how to get Apple’s attention on this? I have restarted my iPhone and watch at the same time and checked all settings and nothing has worked. I’m really hoping to avoid a “reset all settings” situation.

Same problem on my iPad Pro 9.7-inch (vintage 2016). IPadOS 14.4.1 ... it's been happening for a few days now in a 3-person conversation. I own no other iDevices. Have been missing message notifications, very aggravating.

FWIW ... happened to me again an hour or so ago on my iPad in a 3-person conversation. In screenshot #1 notice the appearance of the small icon that the red arrow is pointing at. This appeared just as I started typing my reply. Then it changed to a normal looking half moon after I'd sent the reply. I then manually "unmuted" it. Then about 15 minutes later a new reply comes in from one of the other two participants, along with chime notification. I go to iMessage to read the reply, and it's muted again (ref. screenshot #2), even though I'd heard the chime. Unmuted again manually, rinse repeat ... So aggravating.
