Group Text On iPhone11, Phone Keeps Muting Alerts on a Thread

I have a group text thread with three others. I muted alerts on the thread while I was busy on Wednesday. I went in to the info on the thread and unmuted the alerts Wednesday evening. But the mute/dnd on that thread seems to keep turning itself back on. Every time I return to the iPhone Messages app, the mute on that thread is turned back on. I have reset it dozens of times. I have closed the app and restarted it. I have rebooted the phone. I have checked on my laptop, and tried turning off the mute there instead. But it keeps re-muting that threat. Help!

Hello JWey2021,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand that group text is muted by itself on your iPhone, and we'd be happy to look into this with you.

Just to confirm, are you following these steps to unmute yourself?

  1. Go to the group text message.
  2. Tap the top of the conversation, then tap the Info button .
  3. Turn off Hide Alerts.

If the group text isn't pinned. When Hide Alerts is off, you'll not find a crescent moon icon next to the conversation.

Also, let's try to leave the group text, and rejoin again by following the steps in this link:

Leave a group text on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

We hope this information is useful. Kind regards.

Hi Moo,

I’m the OP on this thread. I do not know what’s happening for you. Several people have found solutions to their specific problems and posted on the thread. Other folks have not been able to find a solution for themselves. I recommend that you reply to “karina184” on this thread. She was the Apple Community Support Specialist who first responded to me be for I solved my problem by rebooting both my phone and watch as described earlier. Good luck!

Hi Karina,

I’m the OP on this thread. I had marked it solved back when it was just me, and my problem resolved. But now, there are LOTS more people here experiencing the same/similar issues. Can you please unmark this as solved, and perhaps help the many folks here find solutions for what seems like a real bug (not a feature) someplace. Thank you!!

I recently purchased my first iPhone and am extremely frustrated with the text alert ping constantly being muted. I have returned to the AT&T store every day for 4 days straight to resolve this issue. They have tried several things and each time I leave the store it works. Unfortunately the text alert ping lasts maybe 3 hours and resets itself to mute once again. We're on our 3rd "Reset Settings".

Reading this thread, many others have this same issue so this is obviously a big problem. What is being done to resolve it and when and how is a fix going to be made?

To everyone in this thread ... I doubt there's any solution here other than to wait for an iOS/iPadOS update that corrects the problem. I believe it was introduced in either iOS 14.4.0 or 14.4.1. Another update (14.4.2) was just released yesterday, so try installing that and see if the problem goes away. It may have on my iPad, I'm still evaluating.

Thank you Ras. I have also encouraged people to reply not to me or the thread generally, but to Karina, who was the apple rep who initially responded. Or to create a new “unsolved” thread, and link to this one, as that status could be why this one seems ignored by Apple. I cannot change the status on this thread, despite trying.
