2020 Macbook Air M1 unable to connect with Target Display Mode

Using a 2011 iMac 27 High Sierra, a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter, and Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 2 cable, the 2020 Macbook Air M1 can not connect using Target Display Mode.

Trying to use my mid 2011 iMac as a display for my 2020 Macbook Air.

Target Display Mode will work, without issue, with my 2011 Macbook Pro and 2011 iMac 27, when CMD F2 is used at Login Screen. (Thunderbolt 2 cable)

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.1

    • A 2019 or older Intel Mac running macOS 10.15 Catalina or older.
    • Apple Silicon Macs are not supported
    • mac OS11 Big Sur is not supported.

TARGET COMPUTER (the one to be an external monitor):

    • An iMac 27-inch (Late 2009 and Mid 2010)
    • any iMac from Mid 2011 to Mid 2014.
    • The target computer must run no higher macOS than OS 10.13.X High Sierra.
