M1 Mac Mini bluetooth issues fix?

I updated my new M1 Mac Mini to 11.2.1 and the issues with my bluetooth keyboard and mouse persist. It's not dropping connections anymore but about every 3rd day or so when I wake the computer the keyboard will at first not respond, then the text races to catch up, adds characters I didn't type, and generally misbehaves. The mouse appears to act normally but it's hard to tell since I'm at the login screen.

At any rate, is there any special I need to do to fix this? It's an Apple wireless keyboard and a logitech mouse. Both worked fine on my 2015 MacBook Pro...

I have a Mac Mini M1 16GB/256GB. Just purchased a Hagibis Hub which arrived today.

Some observations:

  • To begin I had Wifi switched off - working with Ethernet.
  • As soon as I began using the hub I started to experience Bluetooth issues with my magic mouse.
  • Turned system off and swapped USB-C to USB-C cable that came with the hub from left port to right port on Mac.
  • No more bluetooth issues.
  • Until I then switch Wifi on again...bluetooth issues returned.
  • Turn wifi off again...bluetooth issues gone again.

If it's on by default, that's a deliberate decision by Apple. It's not unreasonable to assume that 1) it has some benefit, and 2) works properly.

I understand that part of this is the joy of being an early adopter of a new platform. I'm having trouble with USB stuff on this computer too. 99% it's a pretty sweet machine but that other 1% can be extremely inconvenient.

Not an option. Not enough ports on this thing to do that.

I think the hub might not be delivering power consistently. If I power cycle it empty and then plug things back into it 1 by 1, they work. I came back to my computer after letting it sit overnight and found an error reading "USB Devices Disabled. Unplug device using too much power to re-enable USB devices."

The hub has a printer, external hard disk (powered by the hub), and a headset attached to it, nothing major. All worked on the same hub on the previous MacBook Pro.

I wonder if the sleep issue was a problem for the USB devices too. I'll have to let it sit for a while and see.

I just started having similar problems on a 2014 Mac mini running Big Sur, the keyboard, mouse and trackpad suddenly started disconnecting and reconnecting every minute or so. I assumed a hardware issue but started to look back to what else had changed the day before it started, and led me to the Apple TV I'd put in the same room the night before. Turning off the Apple TV cured all my problems. Don't know why but obviously my peripherals were being hijacked or trying to connect to the Apple TV.

Yeah, I thought that turning off the sleep feature fixed it but it came back again. The latest update that was supposed to correct Bluetooth issues didn’t correct it either. A response from Apple on this persistent issue would be nice.

I’m using a Logitech mouse and Apple wireless keyboard. Both worked fine with my precious MacBook Pro. Now about every third time iron so that I return to the computer and try to unlock the screen, the keyboard types additional characters, lags behind my typing, etc. rebooting fixes it but that’s not a reasonable permanent solution.

2 HDMI monitors, 2 4TB external hard drives, wired keyboard, wireless mouse with USB dongle, mini and micro SD reader. As long as Apple continues to play the minimalist game, there will be a need for hubs. If these hubs kill the only ports that Apple is providing, then they need to figure out a better solution. Early adoption shouldn't mean killing off a tech before it's actually dead.

That is a rather strange assertion to make. Explain how I can hook up my webcam, electric piano, audio interface, keyboard, mouse, stream deck, and sometimes a flash drive or other device with just 2 USB ports? The only 2 from that list of 7-9 devices that could be made wireless are the keyboard and mouse.

Sure, for a large portion of users, they can get by with just the 2 USB-A ports and 2 USB-C ports. But any content creator of any type simply can't get away with that.

4 USB ports, the C are readily converted to A with suitable cable/adapter. The Intel version has 6 (in case you haven’t bought yet). If you throw in a monitor with built-in hub, in most cases a mini-connected USB hub isn’t necessary, especially since the keyboard, mouse, flash drive and “other device” don’t need one dedicated.

But if that doesn’t work for you, by all means, use a hub, but be aware they’re not all the same. Many can cause issues with interference and some powered hubs have been known to take ports out completely. Just so you’re aware.

Yeah I mentioned 4 total, 2 type A, 2 type C. But that is only 3 usable if you are using one of the type C ports to connect your monitor. The intel version with 6 ports plus the assumption of a couple monitor ports could get me by, but I have the M1 version of course. Most monitors only extend USB ports by 2, sometimes 3 or 4. So either way I am still forced to use a hub with the M1 Mini. I do use a bus powered hub though, not external power.

I am not sure why they reduced the ports by 2 for the M1 version. Those extra 2 ports would lead to a lot more flexibility. If it had the 2 extra and I had a monitor with 4 USB ports on it, I would not need the hub.

Yes, sadly I already experience some interference at times. It only happens once in a while and I have not been able to narrow it down just yet. It's mostly noticeable with mouse tracking when it does happen. I am hesitant to blame it on the Mac Mini or things connected to it just yet as I have other devices in the vicinity that could be contributing. It's a little annoying when it does happen but it isn't too often thankfully.

I am still having this problem but I have a workaround!

With my setup (Mac mini M1, Bluetooth keyboard/mouse, old iMac in Target Display Mode as monitor) bluetooth freezes up about once a week: keyboard starts "stuttering", mouse behaves erratically, etc.

My workaround _used_ to be to switch to the iMac, screen share to the Mac mini, turn bluetooth off and on again.

But that's a hassle, so I have now installed `blueutil` through Brew, and whenever I have bluetooth issues I run the following script:

```
#!/bin/bash
blueutil --power 0
echo "bluetooth power off"
sleep 10
blueutil --power 1
echo "bluetooth power on"
```
