“Hide Alerts” keeps coming back!

My brother has an iPhone X and no matter how many times he disables “Hide Alerts,” they keep coming back! He does not want to “Hide Alerts.” He disables them on a text message convo and it comes right back! He does not want to delete the message thread. Anyone else experience this?

iPhone X, iOS 13

My mom just had this same issue, and this is what we found. The conversation she was having this issue with was one that she had pinned to the top of her text messages in the message app. She would click to unhide alerts and it would keep turning on again.

Solution that finally worked after weeks of the issue? Unpinning the conversation!!! As soon as she unpinned the conversation she was able to edit the alerts again without any issue.

I didn’t see anyone mention pinned messages here, but I figured I’d mention it just in case it’s what you are experiencing.

Do any of you have other apple devices that you check your messages on? I checked my Laptop it was fine, I checked my iPad it was fine BUT then my messages app on my iwatch was possibly the problem. At some point I must have accidentally pressed the hide alert on that specific group..... didn't even know I could...... and now it seems to be ok, for the last hour at least. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

Go to the message on your watch and swipe right, the little moon or the delete button will come up. Click on the little moon.

Just a suggestion

Let's double check something:

Open the Messages app and then ensure that you are looking at the list of message threads / contacts. Locate the message thread that you would like to hide alerts from. Touch and Drag that message thread to the Left. That will reveal the Do Not Disturb symbol (Bell). Tap on that Bell symbol and alerts from that Sender and in that Message thread will be hidden and will not display banners, sounds or badge counts. When you want to see alerts in that message thread then simply reverse the actions.

My hunch is that occurs most often for people with multiple IOS devices where the block/unblock settings are inconsistent and the "cloud setting" can't determine which is appropriate. I've experienced this issue after having to "block" notifications on 4+ devices to prevent notification sounds during a company meeting on my iWatch, iPhone, iPad, iMac to stop the notification from occurring. Undoing the setting may be just as complicated or "confused" as blocking them IMO.

Same problem here, looks like it's been going on for two months. You'd think Apple would push a fix by now considering that a lot of people use groups for family messages and no longer get notifications, no matter what they do! I have an iPhone, Mac, iPad, and watch. I've logged out of messages on the Mac, turned off iMessage on the iPad, I've never had notifications on my watch, but I have it configured for Custom - No Notifications, and on my Phone I've tried rebooting, leaving the conversation, and removing the hide alerts setting about 30 times with no luck.

so i kept looking for different ideas in here and i tried making people emergency contacts to see if that helped. it did nothing... so i decided to just delete the entire conversation to see if that helped.

the only thing that worked for me was to delete my ENTIRE group chat and basically start a new one. i haven't had any issues since but that's a pain to have to delete convos just to turn the "hide alerts" off. apple really needs to fix the issue.

i recommend trying that for anyone who's struggling.

Update: This solution did not work over time, my mom's phone reverted to turning on the hide alerts feature on it's own.

New solution: we deleted the entirety of the group chat that she was struggling with, and then had her join again. After a few days, that seems to have solved the problem (and she is not testing it by muting the conversation ever again) The only side effect of this solution is that you will lose the entirety of the conversation once you delete it, so make sure you save anything you want to keep before deleting!

Apple isn't going to fix this! They can't even read the **** question correctly, or they simply have a reading comprehension problem. All they want to do is suggest basic, elementary crap that ALL of us know and have already done. I personally would suggest that this issue has something to do with one of the people that is in the group chat is NOT an iPhone. My group thread has myself and one other that ARE iPhones and one that is NOT an iPhone. I chose to hide alerts for a few days and then when I turned alerts back on the issue started. I turn alerts on, someone responds and immediately hide alerts come back on. NOTHING has worked and I have done them ALL even though I know most of them are completely useless. Apple isn't even interested in this, it's been an ongoing issue for over a year if you look at the posts in this community. All we have is one of us stumbling into a fix and posting it here.

I've also been experiencing this same exact issue since yesterday. I hid the alerts one time for one of my group threads and it's been going back and forth ever since! It's so frustrating because I keep missing texts. This group thread also happens to keep pinning and unpinning itself on its own (which that has been happening for a while). So I don't know what's going on with messages but I hope something gets fixed soon. I'm glad I'm not the only one with the issue.

I found a tiny solution. Make a different contact. Perhaps someone you no longer contact anymore or your own phone number(you can text yourself -helpful way to remind and store stuff for easy access). My conversation with my friends that was buggy with the Hide alerts feature that kept turning on and off was gone. Boom temporary solution until Apple fixes the problem permanently.
