IPod Touch 7 - battery draining

Last year I upgraded from my old iPod Classic to a 7th Generation iPod Touch. I have my iPod Touch sitting in the kitchen when in the house and play it through Bluetooth speakers sporadically throughout the day, or connect in car when driving. I don't feel that I am getting great battery life out of it though. I am using it only for the music app, as that is all I wanted (to replace my old iPod), and it seems that by having that app sitting in the background in between use, it is draining the battery. Is there a way around this? I play long playlists and come and go, so want to be able to restart at the push of a button.

Many thanks.

Andy.
