I just got a new Macbook Air running Big Sur. I needed to update the operating software, which was no problem. However, it won't update Numbers, Pages, Keynote, iMovie, or Garage Band. It just spins the update wheel, but nothing happens. Any Ideas?

What a PITA. Reboot the Mac, and try to update the applications again. If it still fails to update these applications, user your 90 days of free Apple phone support that comes with brand new Mac purchases.
These applications should have been pre-installed in your /Applications folder. If the Mac App Store shows an Open button for these applications, then they are already at their most recent (10.3.9) version. If that button shows Upgrade, then select that.
Are you an administrator of this Mac, or is it managed by another organization?
Try this approach while signed in to the Mac App Store with the same Apple ID as you associated with the new Mac. Press ⌘+0 (zero) which is the previous purchases panel. Try upgrading Pages, Numbers, and Keynote from that panel.
You are welcome. When I took delivery of my M1 mini in early Dec 2020, I simply performed a migration from a Mojave Time Machine backup and then updated the Pages, Numbers, and Keynote applications without having to jump through flaming hoops. Good that you have a resolution now.
I am the administrator of the computer. They were pre-installed, but the App Store says to "update". When I click update, they will not update.
Thanks for the tip. I just tried it, and the update button won't work. I just click on it, but nothing, not even the spinning wheel.
