Is apple obligated to return original parts when performing non-warranty customer paid for service on a customer owned device? I.E...the original battery for my iPhone 8 which I paid to replace this eve. Apple verified the battery was fully functioning w/81% life yet when I requested the original battery (I own the phone) be returned to me after paying for a new battery, the apple store refused to return my original battery.

I can confirm that the battery glue can be a problem. When I went to an Apple store to have the battery replaced in my four year old iPhone 5 they warned me that the glue sometime made it impossible to change the battery. That turned out to be the case, so they gave me a new (maybe refurbished) phone for the cost of a battery replacement.

do you know if there is language in the apple terms and conditions that clarifies customer owned property will not be returned to the customer after service?

sorry...should have further clarified my repair was not warranty.
Once again, this is something you will need to take up with Apple.
