Do Not Disturb App Exceptions

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities. From our understanding, you would like to set it up so certain app notifications alerts you even when Do Not Disturb is enabled, do we have that right? Currently, it is not possible for app notifications to bypass Do Not Disturb. You can only set up certain contacts to bypass it.

It is an option that app developers have. I have an app, Carrot Weather, that has a setting to override DND for emergency alerts. So, it's up to the app developer.

1) Apple doesn't read here for suggestions.

2) Apple has already made that an option. It's up to the app developer to implement it. Contact whoever designed your app.

Emergency alerts, which include severe weather alerts are not affected by DND. You can turn them on in Setthings>Notirications>Emergency Alerts and Public Safety Alerts.

You can also get a weather app that makes use of the override function. The one I use is Carrot, admittedly, not to everyone's taste.

The stock alarm clock app on the iPhone is also not silenced by DND.

And, lastly, I don't know who you're saying, "Please!!!" to. No one participating in this thread has the power to change anything. I doubt any of the app developers who would need to make the changes you want are reading here.

As indicated above, Apple does not participate here, so saying this won't help. The only way to get Apple's attention about this is to use their feedback link, Feedback - iPhone - Apple

It may also be a good idea to provide feedback to the app developers for these medical apps to encourage Apple to find a way to allow this. Along with users, this may carry more weight.

Developers already can create notifications that override DND. Carrot Weather does it. Also, one of the first responders earlier in the thread mentioned they discovered the app they were using does. I don't know why it's not more widely used, though.

As has been noted, Apple doesn't read here for suggestions. "Adding" yourself to the list of supporters here accompishes nothing.

You should also contact the developer of your home security app and ask them to add in the override, a feature that is currently available to them.

Seems like in the upcoming iOS 15 the situation should be improved, by introducing similar functionality called “Focus”, which allows configuring exclusions for apps too.

I found out that it is possible for an app to have a “silent over-ride” in its settings. The call out app that my organisation uses has a switch for it in the app settings. I think it over rides both silent mode and do not disturb mode.

But it would be better for iOS to have a notification “whitelist” in iOS settings for both apps and contacts.

I forwarded the suggestion to Apple.

They did. The developers just need to implement it.

This would be such an easy feature to add in the DND settings, “App Exceptions:” viola. Yes, please! I want to disable all alerts excepts those from my daughter’s Dexcom CGM (Dexcom follow app).

Overnight lows for type 1 diabetics are a big worry. Usually I enable Do Not Disturb on my phone and my wife disables it so we get 1/2 the garbage overnight but she still gets CGM alerts. Almost lost my daughter last night due to too much insulin. Wife left her phone on silent accidentally. My daughter can usually feel when her blood glucose is low when awake, but asleep is a different story. So lucky I caught this without any alerts (I happened to have a hard time sleeping last night).

We’ll have to do something differently to mitigate this, but if you had this feature, I’d be using it already.

I was not aware of that. Thank you for the information. I agree it is a surprise that more do not take advantage of the ability to turn that on for users, especially for medical apps.
