Ipod 20GB B/W with wheel

Hello

I found a super old Ipod classic in B/W with a wheel. I also found the charger and the USB adaptor.

I'm posting my question here because the oldest machine I have is a MACPRO 4.1 with an ELCAPITAN system software.

Tha IPOD worked perfectly in every original function. I had more than 12GB free and I wanted to put some music there.

Before plugin it into the MACPRO I plugged it in a MACBOOKPRO with Catalina and on the display I read installing the software, so I let it finish.

At the end of the process the music files were intact, but Catalina installed a variety of additional folders suc as TV, Podcast, photos and more unavailable to this hardware.

Also inspite of the upgrades in ITUNES (now MUSIC) the IPOD was not visible although I could see it on the desktop.

Is there a way to downgrade to the original software and connect it to the machine with ELCAPITAN hoping the older system software will work with this still very good piece of equipment?

I also have an old TIGER MACPRO but also there the IPOD appears on the desktop and I can see it using TERMINAL, but it doesn't connect to ITUNES asking me to use some software to reformat it.

As most of the old Apple hardware the machine works perfectly, but what is missing is the software. I also have other computers all working but in need of ancient system software ... I always wish Apple would create a web space where paying older users could download (paying) the old software. After all we the older buyer of the great Apple products contributed to the development and success of Apple ... ao I wonder if such an internet space exists at all .... and if yes where is the link.

Any suggestions?

Thanks a lot

I might have written my question badly. I don't want to downgrade anything. I just want for my 1996 greyscale IPOD to communicate with ITUNES or whatever else is possible.

I don't want to downgrade anything as the machine never came as an IOS device. I was even able to use it as an external Hard Drive when necessary. The original software gave a different "finder like" on the small greyscale window, but using DiskUtily I was even able to format it the way I wanted to. If I used the older ITUNES software I was able to reinstall the IPOD and export/import songs from various drives.

This is what I would like to do now, however none of my current Itunes recognize it, while some older software which made faster and easier to move audio in and out Itunes still sees the content of my IPOD.

This software cannot move the files from the IPOD to the ITUNES I have as the appear to be invisible to the software.

Is all rather strnge.

Also Terminal sees the IPOD and using the various TERMINAL command I am able to see inside it.

I therefore wonder if there is a way to use this very good hardware and make it able to communicate with ITUNES. This is all-

Thanks

Hi rimidalv47,

Thank you for that information, as far as your current MacBook Pro only seeing the iPod in Terminal and Disk Utility. With your Mac Pro, have you tried to connect your iPod to it? if so, does it recognize it or give you any error messages? If your current MacBook Pro is unable to access it correctly, we would need to try a different computer with an older operating system. Keep in mind if your iTunes prompts you to restore the iPad, that means it will erase the iPad and start it up as when you first purchased it.

Cheers!
