ipad pro battery replacement not available?

The battery on my first gen iPad pro 12.9" is on its way out. Speaking to the people at my local Apple store I've learned that the battery on this model is not replacable, nor would they do any other kind of service on it, if required.

Third party repairers are also loathe to touch it, as apparently the screen is often broken while fixing it. I've been quoted AU$900 to replace it, which is obviously not do-able - that's more than two standard ipads, or more than a new iPad Air and 2nd gen pencil!

Further discussion with the Apple store has taught me that this model is also not eligible for trade in. So, in other words, I have a very expensive device that still works perfectly that I now have no choice but to throw away.

Yes, I've had plenty of good use out of it since buying it years ago, but getting rid of it when it is still in perfect condition, other than the battery seems wrong.

I'm exploring my options as the device is semi-critical to my work - are the newer ones upgradeable, or will I be saddled with the same problem four or five years down the line?

The newer Apple devices will, more than likely, end in the same fate or worse as Apple is making their devices nearly impossible to repair or replace batteries by third party electronics repair centers now, by serial-ising every internal part and linking THAT part to each and every singular device to make it near impossible to be able to swap out/cannibalise parts out of other damaged, but exact same model devices.

It is what it is.

Apple and other major device manufacturers are lobbying hard and spending millions to snuff out any possibilities of “right to repair” our devices elsewhere and for cheaper costs.

Apple and other electronics makers/manufacturers think that THEY know what is best, but clearly don’t.

The next new thing going around, now, for the future is that we will pay an expensive cost for these electronics devices that we will never really own and never be able to repair through any cheaper third party services and we will, supposedly, be happy about that!

Again, it is what is

Only you can decide what you want to do in the near future for a device.

You could always leave your older iPad Pro constant;y tethered to power and forget about constantly charging what is left of the battery.

Best of Luck to You!

I agree with you MichelPM. It is a concern.

In my case, all the iPads released before and after mine are able to have their battery replaced, and eligible for trade-in. Just this particular model is not. It is infuriating.

At the moment my options for alternatives appear limited. Android hasn't the tablet apps I require, and the Surface, which I use in the office every day, is a poor tablet experience. It appears that having my existing iPad tethered to a power source is my only option. Very far from ideal, and it marks a rather sour note to my 30 years of Apple product use.

I own two of these 2015/2016 12.9 inch screen iPad Pro models ( 256 GBs versions ) and it looks like I will be facing a similar situation as you when the batteries in my own older iPad Pros start to fail.

There is NOT much to be done when the batteries start to go.

I am hoping to have better luck than you, as I live in the U.S. finding a better deal for a third party battery replacement service for my older iPad Pro models, myself, as I really can’t afford a new or newer 2018, 12.9 iPad Pro right now or even the 10.9 inch screen iPad Air 4

Once you experience using the nearly 13 inch screen iPad, it is really going to be hard to go back to a smaller screen iPad model.

When the day comes when my iPad Pro batteries start failing and draining faster, that will be the time I start looking for a reasonably priced battery repair service for these two iPad Pro models.

I think being in the U.S., I maybe able to get more reasonable pricing to install a third party battery.into these iPad Pro models.

Sorry that you could find a more reasonable AU third party repair center to do your iPad Pro battery replacement.

The pricing you got seems just outrageous and ridiculous price gouging.

Sorry & Good Luck on any decision/s you make.

Michel.

Thanks again MichelPM.

Pricing for third party battery replacement is usually quite reasonable here. Just that they appear to be covering themselves for breaking the screen, and, I guess, more trying to dissuade people from bringing this particular model to them in the first place.

And you're right - the screen is too lovely and useful to give up. I won't miss accidentally dropping it on my nose while using it in bed, though! :)
