What does red box in automation track mean?

I'm trying to record automation of a plugin parameter. Most of the knobs record fine. One of the buttons fails to record automation. Instead, Logic draws these unusual dark red boxes in the automation track ... The red box always has two parts: the 1-bar wide part, and a 1-beat wide rectangle above it. In the attached picture below, the red box is in bar 10. The red box moves to the right along with the transport.

If someone could tell me why Logic is drawing those red boxes, then maybe I can figure out what is happening.

Now I see that the Autopunch has nothing to do with that. Now I see that your mystery red box is below the ruler. BTW, Autopunch is for recording Audio/MIDI data and has nothing to do with recording Automation.

However, I figured out what is going on. You forgot to mention that this is a Software Instrument Track (not an Audio Track). In this case there are a few conventions.

    • When you are in record mode, Logic will only create a Region (to store the incoming MIDI Messages) when you actually play your MIDI controller (MIDI Message coming in). That becomes the area with the narrow light red box. Because in Automation View, the Region is only displayed in the Region Header section (the strip) on top.
    • The big dark red box is the area of the incoming MIDI Data but Logic round the length of a MIDI Region to the full bar. This is usually the red area that evolves when you record on a Track.
    • The red area is only one bar because I stopped playing more MIDI notes. So Logic is still in Record Mode, but doesn't create empty MIDI Regions.
    • The Playhead is still red because I'm still Record Mode, but Logic doesn't record anymore because I passed the Autopunch out position.

Just switch the Automation on or off to see how Logic divides the Track Lane into the Track Lane + Automation Lane. What's happening during the recording (the view of the red boxes) depends on the various factors I explained above.

Thanks for the suggestion. I cannot get that Autopunch icon to appear: in the location where the Autopunch icon should be, instead I have a dimmed tuning fork icon ... not sure what the tuning fork is for; but there is no Autopunch icon, even after I've enabled all Advanced control panel options.

I don't think that the Autopunch red bar that appears at the top of the track (as seen in your picture) is the same as the dark red rectangle I'm seeing. My dark rectangle is exactly 1 bar wide, and appears below the transport cursor (on top of the automation curves); and the dark red rectangle moves along with the transport.

Also, I have several parameters that I can automate just fine: it is only this one parameter (a multi-choice radio button) that produces that dark red rectangle in the automation lane.

Ah, okay. I turned on Auto Punch, and then tried to record automation. You can see that the problematic red box is inside the automation lane below the autopunch red rectangles (which are up higher, near the measure numbers). If I could figure out what that unwanted lower red rectangle is, maybe that would explain why the automation is failing.
