using ssd for raw media only

My 4k projects are sometimes over 2TB and I cannot afford a 3TB ssd. When I start a project I want to "leave in place" the camera files (on a SSD) and save the project on an external HDD. What I am wondering is, after I start editing, adding effects, transitions, changing clip speeds etc., will FCP run quickly? Will I get the full benefit of a fast SSD?

Cheers

It sounds like a good plan.

Make sure that you don’t have set the application to create optimized media on import, and turn off background render, otherwise the application would use the optimized media and render files to playback and hardly even use the original. Optimized media is huge and you are not going to need it (and by default would be created inside the library, thus in slower drive).

I don’t think you need proxies.

I never use proxies myself.

With a recent mac like yours, you can certainly edit with original media, unless it is some 8K stuff, or heavy things like RED or something like that. Regular 1080p or even 4K media in H264? Your mac can handle that, easy.

The one thing where your mac may be a bit thin on is RAM. If it is a 27”, it’s a no brainer to add more RAM. On a 21.5”, it is problematic, but you can still live with 8GB.

Thanks for the reply Luis. I am just wondering, without optimised media (I usually use proxy) will there really be a speed benefit? I am using a 2019 3ghz 6 core i5 iMac with 8 gigs of ram (I close all apps when running FXP). The SSD drive I am thinking of getting is the Samsung T5. The new T7 may be out of my price range.

At the moment everything is on a 7200 external HDD.
