Music autoplay does not always work

Sometimes - but not always - when I am playing music on my iPad, the autoplay feature, where music continues to play after an album is over, does not work. Not only does it not work, but the icon (the infinity symbol) to turn it on and off does not appear on the screen. Some days it works fine; other days, like today, it doesn’t. Any ideas?
