Ding-dong instead of voice direction in Apple Maps

When driving with Apple Maps, sometimes the voice directions are suddenly replaced by « ding-dongs ». This is extrememy annoying and even dangerous. All the voice and volume settings are correct. I haven’t found a way to get voice back (starting again the navigation or killing Maps app does not help... it will remain like that until at some point voice comes back on a next navigation...).

Even resealed ting the voice valine refuses to work. It will give ONE to show I selected it and then goes directly back to beep boops. I e nearly crashed several times since the most recent firmware update which is when this started happening.

I found the fix!

For me, it was the Toyota Entune app. Go to settings -> Entune and turn off microphone access. Apple Maps will talk to you as usual again! Enable microphone in Entune, and you will get the Ding Dongs.

This was the Toyota Entune app for a Prius Prime. If you’re getting this issue too, check your vehicle app, Spotify, Alexa, etc, and disable the microphone.

Hope it works for you too!

I had this same problem but realized this started to happen when I had Spotify playing music while using directions. If you also use Spotify while using directions, try deleting and re-downloading the app. This fixed the issue for me but if this isn't related to Spotify use, try with other apps that you might use in the background!

Hope this helps!

I had this too. It’s something to do with other apps that are allowed mic access when locked. For me it was Spotify. They added a new thing called “hey Spotify” a few weeks ago, which coincided with when my maps started dinging instead of giving voice directions. I went into the Spotify settings and turned off “hey Spotify” then into my phone settings and turned off mic access for Spotify. Everything came back to how it used to be. Voice directions and no dinging.

If you don’t have Spotify, look for any other apps that are allowed mic access on the Lock Screen. I would bet it’s the same problem.

Hello Roeark,

We're glad you thought to ask Apple Support Communities about the issue you're having with voice navigation beeping instead of hearing the voice. Great steps with quitting/relaunching the app, checking the settings, and stopping/starting the route. If you connect to your car via USB, try while using a different USB cable to help rule that out. If you connect via Bluetooth instead, forget the connection and pair again to see if a fresh connection helps. Steps to unpair can be found under "Unpair a Bluetooth accessory" here: Pair a third-party Bluetooth accessory with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

You'll also want to check with your stereo or car manufacturer to see if there are available firmware updates for your stereo. Keep us posted.

Take care.

So I've had the same issue and finally figured it out. Some other 3rd party app is taking over your microphone. For me, it was Amazon Music streaming app. Others mentioned Spotify doing the same thing. I fixed it by going to the settings and disallowing microphone access to the Amazon Music app. Voila! The turn-by-turn directions in maps started working again right away.

I’ve tried other solutions like disabling hey Spotify and and disabling voice access for other things. I’ve found that voice always plays if I have nothing else running, but if I have Spotify playing music, even with the suggested settings I will not get any voice directions.

I tried deleting and re-installing Spotify and for some reason it worked?

im not sure why it worked and I don’t know if it is a permanent fix for my problem.

If it is not Spotify related, look for other apps that run while you use maps. They might be the source of the issue.
