Ding-dong instead of voice direction in Apple Maps

When driving with Apple Maps, sometimes the voice directions are suddenly replaced by « ding-dongs ». This is extrememy annoying and even dangerous. All the voice and volume settings are correct. I haven’t found a way to get voice back (starting again the navigation or killing Maps app does not help... it will remain like that until at some point voice comes back on a next navigation...).

Even resealed ting the voice valine refuses to work. It will give ONE to show I selected it and then goes directly back to beep boops. I e nearly crashed several times since the most recent firmware update which is when this started happening.

I found the fix!

For me, it was the Toyota Entune app. Go to settings -> Entune and turn off microphone access. Apple Maps will talk to you as usual again! Enable microphone in Entune, and you will get the Ding Dongs.

This was the Toyota Entune app for a Prius Prime. If you’re getting this issue too, check your vehicle app, Spotify, Alexa, etc, and disable the microphone.

Hope it works for you too!

Same here, started around 1.5-2 months. I’m assuming it coincided with an update or some sort. It’s incredibly annoying and makes the Maps app (which I love) just about useless for navigating while driving. My vehicle does not have CarPlay but I get the issue over Bluetooth or wired into my car via USB.

I typically use Bluetooth and have never had the issue before the time period described above. The beeps are normal while on the phone, but I’m not on the phone. Seems to occur if I’m playing audio from any other app. If I drive in silence like a weirdo then it the turn by turn navigation still works. I’ve had to switch to Google Maps which doesn’t exhibit this dumb behavior. I’ve tried resetting and forgetting the Bluetooth connection from my car. Please fix this!!

I’m having the exact same issue, and for me it doesn’t matter whether I’m connected to Bluetooth or not, it ALWAYS beeps instead of talking. I’ve almost crashed several times because of it, and no matter what setting I change it’s still the same. I know it’s not a problem with my specific phone, because I’ve had my iPhone replaced twice since I’ve started having this issues.

I am not talking on the phone, it happens when I am on either Apple Car Play or Bluetooth (always happens on bluetooth). Happens when I have Spotify on, it will stop Spotify from working and just beep instead of talk on Apple Car Play. I have to unplug and replug the phone several times, restart apps, restart directions to get it to work, there does not seem to be a reason for when it works vs doesn't

Not helpful, I’m using my iPad with AT&T service for navigation. Bluetooth and hotspot is always off to save battery life. Maps is the only app running and it still alternates between spoken directions and “dingdong”. This is so annoying, sometimes it even starts with spoken navigation then switches to “dingdong” mid trip. I never know what I’m going to get. I’ve missed so many turns and exits because of this.
