Canon CR.3 files and preview

I have recently purchased a Canon R6 Mirrorless camera and if i try to view the image files in preview

i only get to see a thumbnail of the original file and not the image. If i highlight the file then i get to see the image in whatever way i have chosen eg List view Icon view etc. I just wondered why all of the files/thumbnails are not viewable in the preview window i also had this with the Canon 90D but i also own a Canon 5Dmkiv and the thumbnails are all viewable in preview. I do have other software which i can use to view them but i just wondered why it is not possible via preview.

Any advice would be appreciated

I am running iMac late 2015 27"retina display Big Sur 11.2.1

Here is a list of currently supported camera Raw file formats. Unfortunately Apple does not list your camera (Canon R6) as being supported at this time. Support for your camera will come with a future Mac OS or iOS update.

It appears that RAW support is not downloaded until needed. I have not yet figured out how to make the Mac "need" it.

You're welcome. Personally I find the free XnView MP very useful for viewing images that have no thumbnail image.

Down in Software you can open a list of supported cameras.

It appears that you need to load the files into Photos for the computer do download support.

Does the R6 show up in your list of raw-supported cameras on the computer?

Are you connection the camera to your iMac or are you downloading straight from the SD card via a reader ?

Same here because i only used the 90D last week and files weren’t viewable then (I have just sold the 90D)

It was only when i looked at your post that i decided to have a look at some of the 90D folders and opened the folder in preview and every single thumbnail opened as an image as it should do. I tried the R6 CR.3’s again but they wont open.

There are a number of cameras which are supported but don't generate a thumbnail image. I've never seen an explanation as to why that is.

That's why i thought i would create this post to see if anyone can explain why or if we will

eventually be able to use preview to view them if not i won't waste my time in future.I just find it

a quick way of having a look through them before i start to cull them etc

Hi Keith

I have imported a (CR.3) RAW file into photos and it opens up as the image and if i right click on the image

it gives the info and the R6 is shown as the camera. Is that how i see if the camera is supported on the iMac ?

Neither. I don't have either camera. I download sample file from various sites when someone has an issue with particular cameras.

Thats a strange one as I've just looked at some of my 90D folders and they open as proper thumbnails which would not open before but the R6 still not opening

Another mystery. As I mentioned, I don't know when the 90D thumbnail images "magically" appeared.
