Mail requesting password

Mail has asked for my password for internet account. I changed it, updated it, deleted the email account; did everything the help page said to do. It worked for my phone and iPad however not my Mac.

Apple Mail on Macs has a bad issue with changing passwords, here's some notes on it...

Open Keychain Access in Utilities, then either check the Password under that item, change it, or delete it and start over.

Enter the part after the @sign in the search bar.

You may have duplicate or more entries in Keychain Access.

If using a browser to login via WebMail works it's not Name or Password, but likely old passwords interfering.

There''ll be at least 2 entries, maybe more.

The trouble is that Mac Mail almost always chooses the old Passwords if you don't change or get rid of the old ones.

Restart to clear some caches.

The big bugaboo with Mail is finding the keychain for any auto setup Mail accounts, if IMAP it usually involves deleting the account & setting it up again to fix it.

I was having this problem trying to add a mail (not gmail) account just for Notes. In my ~/Library/Keychains folder, I found a subfolder with a long hexadecimal and hyphens name. I deleted that subfolder, logged out, and logged back in. I was then able to add the account, without having lost any passwords from my keychains.

Yes— removed the account. Changed password and all the suggestions listed on the help page. It states it does not “recognize the address and password”. It worked for my iPad and iPhone but not the Mac which makes me think something changed on the Mac to prevent it from loading? I am able to open a web browser and log on to my email through the email server.

Do you Use an Apple Password?

Use a new app password. Time-limitations may apply, meaning it expired. So, rather than removing the account from Mail, just sign in with a new app password, which would be retrievable in the eMail provider's site. So, ask you eMail provider how to obtain an app password.
