how do i delete podcast epidsodes i have lisened to from my ipod

I am having a terrible time deleting podcasts that I have listened to and then only saving podcast episodes to my ipod. This used to be easy What happened

iPod Touch 6 gen, can't delete podcasts viewing the list in iTunes, I can't delete podcasts I manually up loaded won't delete from iTunes library so, I can't remove them from the iPod oddly, more difficult to put them on the iPod than used to be I did manage to remove some pod casts months ago, but the the listing for the podcast remains in the library can't I remove those? thank you

How to delete a podcast channel in iTunes (when iPhone is selected)... in iTunes (on Windows 10), when my iPhone is selected, I want to remove podcast channels that I'm no longer interested in, but there is no simple Select & Delete option (or any other option to remove as best I can tell). Does anyone know how to do this? screen shot below...

If you sync only unplayed episodes then played episodes should get removed once you sync. You can select episodes in your library and delete manually, or you can adjust your retention settings. What model iPod is this?
