how do i delete podcast epidsodes i have lisened to from my ipod

I am having a terrible time deleting podcasts that I have listened to and then only saving podcast episodes to my ipod. This used to be easy What happened

If you sync only unplayed episodes then played episodes should get removed once you sync. You can select episodes in your library and delete manually, or you can adjust your retention settings. What model iPod is this?
