iPhone 12 ProMax through aux cord to 2008 auto

My partner just came to join the apple community by switching from Samsung to a new 12 ProMax. She was hoping to speak handsfree to incoming calls much the same as she did with her Android. Upon trial with a newly bought aux to lightning cable, she could not hear through the stereo speakers. Playing music through same cord works.

what might we be missing?

Is there a setting on the iPhone we need to change? I appreciate the guidance. Sincerely, Jeff

Hello Plitzkrieg,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities, and we'll be happy to help in any way we can. Is the car compatible with CarPlay? THis article goes over how to check: https://www.apple.com/ios/carplay/available-models/

If so, this article goes over how to use CarPlay: Use CarPlay with your iPhone

Thank you Chuck_3rd.

Unfortunately the vehicle is a 2008 Buick Enclave. My girlfriend had a Samsung Galaxy previously where the phone allowed her to speak hands free via stereo and aux cable hook-up alone.

She tried a lightning to aux cable with no success; perhaps she needs a Y-cable with USB and aux on one end AND lightning on the other. I appreciate in advance your guidance.
