Error message - error downloading slideshow photos

Just recently upgraded to Catilina and am having trouble doing slideshows from my Photos albums. It gives me a message that ‘an internet connection is necessary to download larger versions of these items for creating a slideshow’ which makes no sense since the files are very large and they are on my computer and not being downloaded off the internet. I am a long-time Mac user and have done slideshow presentations many times, never having this problem.

Can anyone help me out? This seems to be a problem on all my albums at present!!

Thank you.

What system and Photos versions are you using?

Verify that you're using a "managed" library and not a "referenced" library.

and that you don't have the iCloud Library enabled:

Also see if you can export the original file of one of the photos that you're having problems with to the Desktop.

If you did not have the checkbox checked to import the originals into the library at the time of import you've lost all of the original files that were added to the library while that checkbox was unchecked. Do you know where the originals are located? If so you can put then all in a folder, and do a File ➙ Consolidate… to bring them all into the library.

Good morning Old Toad. I have reviewed your suggestions and found the following:

I am using Mac OS Catalina and Photos 5.0. This is a new Mac Mini computer purchased in July last year.

Re your question about 'Managed Library', on checking I found that the item you circled in red was NOT ticked and as well neither was the Metadata ticked, and I have now ticked them both and did a restart of the computer.

iCloud Photos is NOT ticked but I do have the My Photo Stream ticked. Shared Albums is not ticked.

I exported an image from one of the problem albums to the desktop with no issue - a large 1.5 meg that seems just fine.

Unfortunately I still have the problem!! However, I did find that not all the albums have this issue - good news is that the few pictures I have taken in 2021 seem o.k. but since I haven't been anywhere I don't have many pictures! It seems that mainly the problem occurred when I changed over to the new computer. This was quite a challenge for me as normally when switching to a new computer (this is the third mac mini we have) Apple transfers all my data over for me and I just take it home. But because of Covid they weren't able to do this for me. So I obviously did something that is not working properly in my settings. I have been able though to keep the previous mac mini up and running and available to me using the screen sharing feature and so I can go back and create a slideshow etc. on it and export it. This seems to work o.k. but is time consuming and cumbersome. However, I think future albums should work fine from now on with the settings you have suggested, but any other suggestions you have would be most appreciated. My 80 year old brain is being quite challenged!!!

Thank you for your help!!

Gayleen
