What would that have to do with the particular macOS that you are running? Basically every intel processor from 1995 is a potential target.

that has nothing with wanting to upgrade your machine to macOS Big Sur if you wanted to

It appears that Grant Bennet provided the best answer. It looks like Meltdown and Spectre malware, which Intel won't fix, are the reason that firmware updates won't install on older intel processors. These programs which apparently reside in Firmware change easily and are extremely intrusive by accessing areas specifically prohibited to get to password and other personal information. I guess I am now not willing to upgrade as it requires a firmware update that is susceptible to this malware. I think I could have done it but it looks like the potential for disaster is too high.


I only which some of the respondents to the upgrade to Big Sur question would say that and reference a more enlightening and definitive answer from Apple.


You can download the software if you want to waste your time with this, but it will NOT install.


Current consensus is that the firmware for these older processors are too vulnerable to Meltdown-related malware, and Intel has declined to provide any patches.
