Updating my icloud profile picture fails - why and what to do?

Trying to update my profile picture on icloud, but there is contiously this message - "Could Not Load Photo":

I am using very basic and normal looking jpgs. Any hints how to resolve?

I went ahead and updated the pic from my iPhone directly. That worked much better, but I am still so see the pic consistently everywhere. It seems to take many hours if not days to synch up completely.
