PowerBeats Pro shutting down with battery

When using my Powerbeats Pro, the left earpiece shuts down randomly, even if it shows more than 80% battery on my iPhone. This only happens with the left one, the right one works normally.

I can confirm now that this problem occurs exclusively with Apple products. It happened when using the buds with my iPad Pro 11 2020, with my iPhone 11 Pro Max but it just won't happen with a Windows laptop or a small Kindle Fire HD 8. I've been using them for exactly one hour now while listening to music on my computer with no problem, but the moment I switch to one of my apple devices, five minutes into a call and the left one went off. I placed it on the case, waited one minute and charge level was 55%. I've scheduled a service call for tomorrow morning.

(Partly Solved) - Read All

Here's some tips to decrease your chances of either right or left Powerbeats Pro shutting down with battery issues. I had all the same problem in this thread, but haven't had one incident after I followed these steps.

PS! Small batteries like in these earpieces would obviously decrease its battery over time. So if its over 2 years old don't expect more than approx 4-6 hours of playing time. In some cases 3-4. (depending on the weather / temperature)

1 - Clean the case connector / earpiece - Make sure nothing is blocking your earpieces from charging.

2 - Make sure the "disfunctional" earpiece (right or left) is getting its charge in its case. If both pieces are charging together, it will show up as one unit (on iPhone). Open the case and pull out one earpiece from the charging case to check if the other one is really charging and repeat with other one. (It should show a lightning indicator above your earpiece if its charging)

3 - (In case of flickering) If you open the charging case and either right or left earpiece is "flickering" inside the iPhone connector, hold in the reset button on the case (with earpieces inside) for 20+ sec until you see a red light flashing and reset your earpieces. If it keeps flickering it means something wrong with the connector and eventually leads to disconnection.

4 - Last but not least, I used to wear my earpieces long before I would start my workout. I could drive with earpieces in for 30min - 1hour+ before even starting the actual workout. This obviously decreases your chances of obtaining battery through the whole workout.

So make sure you have charged each earpiece to max and bring your case (with the earpieces inside charging) to wherever your starting your workout, and only put in and use your earpieces when your starting the workout.

These steps should increase your chances of having battery throughout your whole workout :)

Somehow my left earpiece that shutdown after an hour of listening is behaving kind of normal.

From my speculation and reading through this topic.

There is suppose to be problem with microphone as when I used it for meeting, left one shut off so early with 55% resurrection.

So after going in to bluetooth setting on iPhone and set the microphone to only right ear piece.

It seems to working fine somehow. If you can, please give it a try so we can share the result.

Hello oscarrdz1977,

Thanks for the additional information.

Are your Beats paired with an iPhone and does the iPhone have the latest iOS? We ask because if your iPhone is up to date your Beats also have the latest firmware. Have you also tried cleaning your Beats to make sure nothing is causing interference with the charge?

The resources below can help:

Clean and store your Beats earphones or headphones

After trying the fix I mentioned on 22/04 (letting them both get to 0%) things seem to have improved. I also tried placing them both in the case with the lid open and pressing both round “b” buttons on each bud til they paired again. So far the left has behaved normally and makes it below 85% without dying. I’ll keep testing them and report any changes but I’d suggest trying the two things I did above to see if it helps.

I just pressed them down until the pairing box came up on my phone. Have you tried running them both to 0%? Every time the left cut out I just put it in the case for 5 seconds and immediately took it out and carried on using. I then checked the actual % by looking at the levels from the now playing blue triangle icon when I swipe down from top right corner of iPhone 12, rather than that status screen you had in your screenshot

They’re definitely under warranty. People like you bringing in products under warranty is the key to fixing this. Since it’s likely going to be a firmware issue, you’ll have to keep bringing them in and getting new ones over and over. You’ll probably have to start demonstrating the problem since they’ll try to talk you out of it. Don’t accept that.

For all those who are looking for a solution to the problem:

Buy a replacement earbud on eBay for $50. That’s it. You can pair it with your existing case and non-defective earbud.

I did this several months ago and haven’t had issues since.

There’s no magic firmware update to fix your existing earbud. The new earbud that you buy won’t develop the problem after a firmware update either. In my experience, the new earbud actually lasts a little bit longer than my existing 2 year old good earbud.

I hope this saves a bunch of people some headache.

I reported the same issue today (left bud being fully charged playing for an hour then showing 55% and cutting out (right shows 85%)). Placing in the case for a second and then putting it back in gives it a bit more life but not much. Apple’s advice was to drain both fully, reset then re-pair. I’ll try this and report back if it works though reading other responses I doubt it’s a hardware/battery issue.

one more update: Took to Genius Bar and they’ve taken them away to repair or replace. My UK store said this was the first they’d seen of this issue but agreed it didn’t sound like a battery problem (I.e not a gradual degradation). If I get a summary/diagnostic I’ll update again but otherwise I’ll be getting a repair or replacement within a week. Best of luck and hope the rest of you find a resolution
