Messages not clearing off apple watch after being read on phone.

Just got a new apple watch series 6 and set it up last night. Everything was running smoothly and now today I noticed after I read my text messages on my phone they are not being cleared from my watches notifications. I have already made sure all updates are done on both devices as well as restarted my iPhone. Any idea what my next step should be to remedy this solution? I have it set up to mirror my phone.
