how to connect iMac to mac book air

I have a MacBook air 2012 and iMac 2010 and I am trying to use the iMac as my second monitor using thunderbolt cable. Command F2 doesn't work. Please help

MacBook Air 11″, macOS 10.13

Is the 2010 iMac a 27" model? If so please follow the steps in Use your iMac as a display with Target Display Mode, if it's a 21.5 model it will not work and no there are not any work arounds.

Hi Maferina,

What is the Mac OS version of each? What cable did you purchase, the official Apple cable, or a 3rd party?

Also, the 2010 must be a 27" model, not a 21.5
