When I ask my HomePod to find my iPhone, it says “before you can do that, you’ll need to update your Siri settings on your iPhone”. Which setting do I need to update?

As far as I know you simply need to enable Find My iPhone on the phone. See Set up Find My on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac - Apple Support.
HomePod should be able to sound an alert on the phone if you say "Hey Siri, find my iPhone" and the phone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
