I need to send some pdf documents to an associate. I have read & can encrypt & password protect the files via Preview. I have learned that some protected pdf contents can be accessed by apps or online tools. How safe is the encryption process on the Preview on a Mac running on 10.13.6 High Sierra?

Well, unfortunately we are susceptible to that, yes, and there are apps that can do that dirty job.
There's PDF Creator that can make 256-bit encryption, but the receiver has to have it too since it's not a standard and might not be compatible with most common PDF apps. Not sure about it though. And again, still susceptible to be hacked.
If I'm not mistaken, it uses 128-bit AES encryption, a pretty good one.
Thanks for the prompt response. My question is whether it can be hacked & contents of the file be accessed via online tools. I remember I had used one of such tools on a thumb drive which I had forgotten the password & it worked that time.
