application memory

I have a MacBook Pro c. 2017. I have been getting the message "Your system has run out of application memory". Last time it happened the only apps open were Safari (50.19 GB) and Finder (150.2 MB). The Mac support site has a few very old questions about this, and the few suggestions I tried did not work. (Some were for Catalina but I have Big Sur.) Is there a keyboard solution for this? I am not about to do any internal operations with the cover off.

I do not know the difference between MacBook Pro (2) and MacBook Pro (3) listed below. I guessed I have a (2).

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15

So, your Mac is low on memory, or your RAM is being used to the max

If you have Apps that run automatically on start-up they may be unnecessarily using memory.

You might want to check, and remove them from your log-in items

(System preferences > Users and Groups > Your Account > Log-in Items)

If you have many files sitting on the desktop, it might be good to clean up, to free memory.

(You can put them in a folder called "desktop" if you wish.)
