iPhone does not appear in Finder sidebar

Much (about 80%) of the time my iPhone 6s (running iOS 14.4.1) does not appear in the Finder sidebar. The phone is charging, when I check the System Information I can see it listed as one of the USB devices connection to my iMac (running Big Sur) and the phone does show up in the sidebar in Music. When I click on the phone in Music and click on "Sync Settings" the phone's finder window comes up and I can manually sync the phone from there. I have noticed this happens more often when the computer has been sleeping or when it starts up with the phone connected to it.

Has anyone else ever experienced this and if you did how did you fix it?

Hello, Mark!

After reviewing your post, it seems like you are having an issue with your Mac and your iPhone not communicating as expected. We definitely understand that can be a concern and we'd love to help. Let’s start by reviewing this article: If your device doesn’t appear in the sidebar when connected to Mac.

Please let us know if you have follow-up questions, or if the issue remains unresolved. Have a great day!

Thanks for the update, Mark. If you are able to, let's test using a different USB port, different cable or possibly a different computer, to see if the same behavior occurs when some of the hardware is exchanged. Has there been any damage to the iPhone, the computer or either connecting port? Make sure your Mac is restarted as well, then reconnect and see if your iPhone is detected.

Please let us know a bit more and we can continue looking into this with you.

I am having the same problem since I bought a new iPhone 12, I have updated to the latest Big Sur 14.4.1

It does not show in the Finder or Music sidebar

(1)My iPhone 12 is listed in my Apple ID in iCloud on my iMac

(2)My old iPhone is listed in my USB devices in System Information on my iMac.

(3) My "find my Mac" is checked in both devices.

(4) CD's, DVD's and iOS is checked in Finder Sidebar in my iMac.

(5) I have tried a different USB cable and different ports, shutting down my iMac each time

There are 2 obvious problems:

(A) I cannot get my iPhone to show in Finder and/or Music side bars.

(B) Why do I have my old iPhone still listed in USB and how to I remove that and replace it with the new iPhone 12, if this is the problem or another issue.

Thanks in advance for looking into this

Greg

I only have one computer running Big Sur so I wasn't able to check a different machine. I have tried different cables and the behavior is still the same. My wife's iPhone, our iPads, and my old iPod nano all behave normally. It is only the iPhone 6s where this happens. I have found that if I unplug the phone and then reconnect it (this can take several tries) eventually it will show up in the Finder sidebar. I have been getting along by accessing the phone's Sync Settings in Music (the phone does show up in the Music sidebar) and opening up the Finder window that way. Even when I do this workaround the phone does not appear in the Finder window sidebar.

We appreciate you testing that for us, Mark. From here, it looks like there might be a hardware cause for this. If you have the ability to do so, we'd suggest borrowing a computer from a friend or family member who might be using Big Sur to see if the behavior is the same. Another version of Mac could possibly be helpful too, if there is an older Mac available.

If the issues persist, it might be good to have the iPhone inspected at an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider in your region to check for possible hardware causes for this behavior. They may also be able to test your iPhone with another Mac running Big Sur there, as well.

Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance and we hope you have a great day.
