iPad Pro wont recognize USB-C on PC

I have been sitting for almost 2h now and still cant get my iPad Pro to connect to my USB-C.

I want to use my iPad as a secondary monitor to my PC. Before, i have used two different USB-A to USB-C cords to enable screen splitting (using the app duet) and it has worked great BUT the iPad has not charged at the same time (first cord was USB 2.0 and second was 3.0 but the USB slot didnt give enough watt to charge it).

Now im into my thirde cord, a USB-C to USB-C, and while the iPad actually charges now, my PC wont recogonize it - i only get this symbol (below) and the error code i get it: (Code 10) STATUS_DEVICE_DATA_ERROR

I have tried pretty much every tip i can find online:

  • installed the lastest driver via Windows update
  • uninstalled and installed iTunes and updated it to the latest version
  • installed the driver via the Apple driver folder under program:
  • installed the driver manually (usbaapl64.inf)
  • removed and added the USB unit under Device manager
  • stoped and restarted Apple Mobile Device Service
  • restarted the iPad a few times, both normaly and with hard reset
  • reset location and integrity in the ipad settings

Im ready to give up. Any help in this matter would be appriciated. The motherboard im using is ASUS Sabertooth Z170 MARK 1 and the cord im currently using is the one below in the image:

The USB hub for which you provide a link has only a 10W Power Supply. This is barely adequate - if it would work at all with the iPad.

Perhaps this would be a better choice for your iPad:

https://www.anker.com/ca/products/variant/powerexpand-6in1-usbc-pd-ethernet-hub/A83650A1

This Hub supports USB PD (Power Delivery) over USB-C - and provides a USB port to which you might connect your PC. When used with a suitable Power Adapter (e.g., Apple 30W) you will have USB PD pass-through charging of your iPad Pro. The Hub USB PD specification states pass-through charging capability of up to 65W; your iPad Pro supports USB PD at 18/20W. Given that the hub itself requires power, I would suggest that a 30W Power Adapter will be adequate.

From your timezone, I presume you are in the UK or Western Europe. This 30W adapter listing is from the Apple UK website:

  • Apple 30W USB-C Power Adapter

Please note, this is not an endorsement of suitability for your application or of ultimate compatibility your equipment. I have not tested this item. This is suggestion based entirely upon (a) stated specifications of the Anker USB-C Hub and (b) your explanation of what you are attempting to achieve.

Having re-read all of your comments, you appear to have two essentially unrelated technical issues with connection of your iPad to your PC:

1) The ability to successfully connect data via the single USB-C port on your PC.

2) The ability to supply power/charge the iPad Pro from the connected USB port.

Both problems are technically independent of each other - despite each issue being related limiting capabilities of the USB port(s) to which you are connecting your iPad.

The majority of computer USB ports are unable to source adequate power to charge high power devices - most USB ports being limited to 0.5 - 1.0A (i.e., 0.5 - 1A @5V). Most models of iPad require a minimum of 2.0 - 2.4A (10 - 12A @5V).

Unless you have a USB port that is expressly designed to charge devices, you are unlikely to be able to power/charge your iPad from your PC - no matter what cable you use. As such, you may need to accept that you are unable to use your iPad as a secondary monitor for your PC long periods, endurance being limited by the available battery charge.

Using an appropriate cable, you are seemingly able to make a data connection. The USB port, however, cannot provide adequate power.

The potential solution to both issues is to use a powered USB hub - that is capable of sourcing at least 12W power, to which you connect both the iPad and the working USB port of your PC. The powered USB hub will provide adequate power for the iPad.

An alternative approach might be to retrofit your PC with a high-power USB Card.

You are clearly having difficulty with USB on your PC. You are going to need to diagnose the issue from the PC’s Device Manager.

Have you tried using a different USB port of your PC?

Given the potential variables, it is impossible to replicate your specific hardware configuration; providing remote support for a Windows PC is clearly beyond the available resources of this support forum.
