Adapter requires too much power

An iPad alone cannot provide adequate power for many external devices. Many will require an external power source.

If attempting to connect the majority of USB devices, you will require an Apple Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter:

This adapter has both a USB3 port and a pass-through Lightning port to which you should connect your iPad Power Power Adapter will provide power to both the iPad and the external USB device.

If using a third-party Ethernet Adapter, you will need to seek assistance from the manufacturer.

Daisy-chaining adapters can often be fraught with difficulties.

If you need to connect to wired Ethernet in preference to WiFi, you may be better advised to use a Lightning to Ethernet Adapter. Apple do not manufacture an adapter of this type, but do market an adapter manufactured by Belkin:

This adapter incorporates a pass-through Lightning port to which you connect your iPad Power Adapter.

We were provided with the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter. It is part of the problem. We are using the Apple Camera Adapter with the Apple Ethernet dongle and it doesn't work consistently (at times, not at all).

We tested a third party adapter from Belkin that works first time. (Ethernet + Power Adapter with Lightning Connector)

Yes, an iOS update might have, I'd contact Ethernet Adapter's customer support - company , there might be a compatibility issue.

I had previously mentioned that we had purchased and tested the Belkin adapter you referenced above.

I was sold an adapter assembly that did not work with the Apple brand. I will seek a refund from the vendor.
