Bus Routing in Logic Pro X

I am trying to record vocals with a compressor on the input chain. If I create a new project, it works as expected: I create 2 new audio tracks. Set the input of one to "input 1" and the output to a bus, say "bus 2." I then set the input of the 2nd track to "bus 2" and the output to "stereo out." I put a compressor on the first track and hit record. It records to the second track as expected, I can monitor and hear if I turn on and off the compressor.

If I use a template I created earlier, it doesn't work. I can create a new audio track, set the input to "input 1" and the output to "bus 2," but when I set the input of an existing audio track in the template to "bus 2" then suddenly I can not monitor, and when I hit record the track in template records a region of empty silence. Same thing happens if I try to create 2 audio tracks and route one to a bus, then input from the bus on the other.

Am I missing something? Does the creation order matter? Is there a bug in my template? The template was created using an earlier version of Logic (10.4 or 10.5, I don't remember which), and I am currently running 10.6.1--does that matter? I'm just trying to record vocals with soft compression on the input. Is there a better way to set this up?

Hey there,

One sound way of approaching this is to create a PATCH with your "new project session". Perform all the same tasks you notated above, select both audio tracks and then create a Track Stack (key command: Shift+CMD=D). From here, you can simply go into the Library (key command: Y) and Save this as a User Patch. Once this is completed, you can then go into your template and recall your new patch from the library.

One quick note: Improper routing can occur when importing project settings if you have "Keep Bus Number" enabled. Best to disable this so all of your bus/sends translate within a new session.

Thanks for the tip! I was able to save it as a user patch, and that's a great time saver! I'm still having the problem with routing though. When I load the user patch into a new project, it works as expected and routes fine. When I load the user patch into any existing project, I can see the routing has been adjusted automatically (input-->effects track-->first available bus-->recording track-->next available bus-->Sum stack track-->stereo output), but it won't record to the "recording" track. The only way I can get it to record to that "recording" track is to set the input of that track directly to input 1. I assume it's a bug and if I want to record this way I'll have to start with a new project every time and save all my template setups as user patches.

Thanks again.
