Face ID used to work for a locked Note that I set on my iPhone 12. Suddenly today, it's not working and asking for password. Which I no longer remember. Why did it stop working? It's still set in Settings to unlock with Face ID

Thanks, but I know how to do it and have locked and been using Face ID to unlock my note for a very long time on my iPhone (and switched doing so successfully over to my new iPhone 12). The problem is that it was working with Face ID until today (I used it in the last day or two), but today it's not and is requiring me to first enter my password. What happened, what changed?
I’m aware of that. And I used one to lock the note originally and have since then used Face ID to unlock it. For years I have not had to enter the password. Until today when notes asked me for the password. Which I have forgotten. I realize this is my mistake but what has made Notes ask for the password rather than Face ID? I have changed no settings.
You always needed a password to secure a Note.
