finder "sort by" is greyed out when attaching a file to email

All I want to do is attach a file to an email I'm sending, but once I click on the paper clip icon, the files in finder windows that come up cannot be resorted. The "sort by" column is greyed out. So I have no choice but to look at all of the file names one by one until I find the one I want to attach. Isn't that what computers are for?

Does anyone know why this is happening and if it can be fixed? If I'm doing something wrong, I'd love to know what it is.

iMac 27″, macOS 11.2

Toolbar, not Touchbar.

The window that opens when you click the Attach button is an Open File Dialog window.

Above what you posted should be a toolbar with buttons (tools) on it.

You should see one with four squares and one with lines. The squares chooses the View and the lines are the Group/sort button.

If you click on the Group/Sort button, you are choosing the grouping of the files. If you hold down the Option key on the keyboard while clicking, you can choose the sort.

You are in List View and have grouped them by Date. Click the Group/Sort button and choose None. Hold down the Option Key, click the Group/Sort button and choose your desired sort criteria. In List View, with no grouping, you can click on the column headers to sort.

Thanks, but I feel really stupid, because I have no idea what the Open File dialog is. And I don't find the Group/Sort button anywhere. (I'm using an iMac, so no Toolbar).

I'll try to attach a bit of what I get when I click on the paper click to attach a file. This is NOT what I want. I just want to be able to sort things in alphabetical order, or by date, but that's not an option, from what I can tell.

I use them occasionally, but I do think the primary function on that button should be Sort, and the Option being Group.

I always think these things are Apple's passive aggression with new "features." They change historical behaviors to implement the new stuff that nobody asked for and they know nobody will use unless they make it unavoidable to stumble across.
