My Safari 14.0.3 has become unuseable - if I look under the Window menu I see dozens or more windows
a lot of them are empty but they slow Safari to an unworkable limping crawl. Anyone have a solution?
I don't want to delete my bookmarks and passwords - thats such a hassle.

Launch Safari holding the shift key down.

Try clearing History.

When you clear history, it will remove much more data.
But it won't remove passwords or bookmarks.
I did that but I still have a long list of windows
