There is no 'Activity' when I give the Rebuild Mailbox command in Mail (under 'Window' in the pull-down menu).
What could be the problem? Is there a way to double check what is going on, perhaps using the Terminal?

Maybe the Mailbox has nothing in it.
You can force the rebuild of the entire Mail database by moving the following files from the ~/Library/Mail/V8/MailData folder.
Envelope Index
Envelope Index-wal
Envelope Index-shm
Quit Mail, move them to your Desktop, then open Mail. It will rebuild everything.
If something goes wrong, you can move them back replacing the new ones that were created.
But, as always, have a current backup before trying anything like this.

It doesn't pop that up anymore. You would need to open the Activity panel (Window menu) to see the activity.
Thanks, I did that once in the past. It requires patience in my case because I have a lot of e-mail, going back to the early nineties. My preference was first doing things according to the book and use that prominent Rebuild command. Which never gave satisfactory results for me anyway.
My guess on the rebuild command is just uses the vacuum tool to clean the database, and then it tries to re-index all the files. Deleting the envelope index deletes the database completely and has to start over completely clean.
I have that little window open when issue the Rebuild command indeed. Still nothing.
