Hello cs444,
Thank you for posting your question using Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're looking to create an email alias for your iCloud account, but you're running into issues with locating the gear icon to do so.
To confirm, are you to create the alias using Mail on macOS, or are you accessing your iCloud account from the iCloud website using a browser?
The user guide for iCloud will walk you through the proper steps to create an alias: Use email aliases on iCloud.com
As mentioned, you'll want to access the iCloud website using a browser, and log into your account there. If you're not seeing the side bar mentioned, that link also includes steps to unhide it.
Let us know if this helps.
Regards.

When you sign in with account credentials at www.icloud.com the gear icon in top bottom corner will always appear , there is no way to hide side bar , however if you took a cursor on any corner and move it diagonally in to large extent the gear icon disappears , but it can once again visible if using full screen mode , but the gear icon is by default .
Thx for reply but didn’t help. I accessed iCloud on Mac browser, not iOS— no gear icon visible in sidebar nor is it visible when I expanded Mail full-screen. Meanwhile I resolved my need for another e-dress by creating a 3rd gmail alias.
How absurd that Apple makes iCloud alias so difficult to create.
So we're on the same page when in the iCloud/Mail web page you don't have this gear button in the left hand corner of the window, right?
That’s correct — no gear symbol lower left corner of sidebar. Or anywhere, for that matter.
You do have an iCloud email account, right? And using Mail as the email client?
Yes, and yes.
Are you using Safari?
No, Firefox.
