I was quite shocked to find that earlier models of Wi-Fi only models did not have a GPS receiver built in and required an external device to be purchased and added on.

For the benefit of absolute clarity, WiFi Only models of iPad do not have any GPS capabilities.
WiFi+Cellular models do include GPS. Although it is not necessary to provision cellular service, iPad GPS functions are an integral element of the Cellular chipset.

If you have a WiFi only iPad (any model made at any time) then you will need an external GPS antennae to use GPS apps. No WiFi only iPad has ever had an aGPS chipset.
